The main reason for the worry is due to Gabe Newell (or some other Valve bod) saying that HL2 would run somethingl ike 30% faster on an ATi - there is after all close links between Valve and ATi. The same thing happened but the other way round with Doom 3. In the end the performance differences were not as marked as id were saying.

Chadruharazzeb: How are you comparing scores? There are so many artificial ways of boosting 3DMark scores (setting process priority for instance) that it may be you are actually OK. Saying that, when I had a Geforce 2 MX, I got woeful performance (~50% of what I should have got) until I put on the latest VIA 4in1 drivers and reinstalled the graphics drivers properly.

Just compared them with scores off other forums. For example, on 3D Mark 03 I'm getting scores of around 10460, when folk of similar (even lower) specifications are getting 12000 odd, give or take.

I thought that was with regards to the graphics cards out last year (close to the initial sept. 30th dater such as the Geforce FX 5xxx cards and the radeon 9xxx cards, and not the recent cards?

Chad: I have a 3500+, 1GB RAM and 6800GT - I got somewhere between 11000 and 11500 normally but when I overclocked I got over 12,000. Are you sure these people haven't overclocked? I'm pretty sure my scores are OK from checking on the FutureMark site - you can publish your scores on there (need to register but its free) and then compare to similar spec machines.

Zapp$ter: Nah, they've said it for both generations. As it is FX 5xxx would have been hammered by the Radeon 9xxx probably, but they difference will be much less marked this gen. ATi will still do better though due to the game being designed for them.

Chad, Csuzw is right. Those scores sound about right for the GT. I only get 11000 on average in '03, and 4600 in '05.

I get about 8000 with my Amd 3200, 1gig 3200 ddr, 9600xt. o the GT's power should be about an extra 4000 points

                I've seen Ultra's and XT's get 12000 in '03 at stock speeds.

You sure Rav? 5000 is generally considered a good mark for the 9800Pro in 3DMark 03.

My Ti4200, meanwhile, fails to hit double-figure framerates through most of the ogre demo in '03, and since it isn't a 9.0 part won't even run the fancy water thing.

                          Just read Edge's Half-Life 2 review.

I take my words back. Mightly impressive it was.

                            Very very impressive.

There is honestly nothing I can say. Nothing...

As it is, I'll just use this one again

Half-Life Fallout are being very naughty, but they'll be the ones taking the hit if this isn't authorised (which I think it might be due to copyright acknowledgement on the webpage).

Here is a link to scans of a German review of Half-Life 2. Of course most won't be able to read the text - But the screens are stunning.
