I've played very little so far (only just getting iron ore for the weapons dude) but it seems to be pretty good. Even this early on the game gives the impression it has so much to it than just hacking away at monsters. Gotta love the randomness of cooking steaks in the middle of nowhere to get your stamina back.

The only negative so far is that the hack and slash combat is rather clunky, it really could do with some sort of lock on feature. Oh and why does your dude have four immensely camp costumes to choose from at the start of the game?!

EDIT - How do I get access to my online ID? Do I need to do all the "introduction" stuff first?

After the guild opens up, you'll see the City (online)/ villiage (offline) modes appear next time continue your game.

Personally I'd consider the addition of a lock-on system to be a dumbing down. The "clunkiness" or lack of lock-on make room for users to become skillful at the game.

Hoolak: Why is the medium bowgun a bad choice? You can always swap out parts. Jaggi are weak again fire, so stick something with fire rounds in it. All weapons have good/bad points and all take practice.
You can probably make parts of the Jaggi Fire now, one part of which is in my Ultimate Bowgun.

Hmm, dunno about that. I certainly don't think some sort of lock-on mechanic would dumb things down because you would still have to switch between enemies, time your attacks and defend. Actually thinking about it a bit more, maybe if the animations were a bit more fluid that would help the clunky feel of the combat. Either way, I was just offering my thoughts and some constructive criticism as a newcomer to the series. The combat isn't broken at the moment, it certainly could be improved though.

          Cheers about the online information.

I was just wondering if it was not the best weapon to use as the fight was took about 30 mins and I ended up chasing it around the whole map

I did only have 10 fire shots at him and the majority of my ammo was Normal Lvl 1.

Chasing monsters all over the map is normal, that's why you get paintballs.

Lock-on would ruin MH. It is about skill, learning the patterns of monsters and more importantly learning each monster's weak spot. The Great Jaggi for example, you do more damage to it placing a well timed blow to its head. With lock on, the "well timed" and maybe head shot would be non-existent.

There's lock-on in the slightly similar Phantasy Star, but you're not aiming for separate body parts.

kryss: Yeah! I paintballed that sucker!

A lock-on mechanic would have little or no effect on learning patterns and weak spots of monsters. Also depending on how the lock-on is implemented (it doesn't need to be restrictive), you could still perform a well timed blow to the head or any other part of the body.

Yeah, a lock-on would work, but I don't want it! I prefer to do the extra work in moving the camera etc. Freedom to judge where I want to hit an enemy and to judge the timing of lugging a massive weapon monsterwards. Lock-on is for GTA chavs! There, I said it.

We're spoilt these days, I tell thee.

I don't use the lock-on on Phantasy Star Portable 2 anyway, I prefer to spread the damage around. I think any kind of lock-on would ruin MH. There's none of that in real life! (okay, no monsters either...)

Again, a very simple lock-on system would not negate any of the things you have just mentioned above. It's not about being spoilt, I was stating what I think could make the combat in Monster Hunter better. I might not be a "pro" like you guys and therefore my opinion might not matter as much but, hey, I thought I would share my thoughts anyway.

                        "Lock-on is for GTA chavs"?!

I guess constructive criticism/genuine discussion is just not allowed on a game you "love" then eh?! I enjoy reading your views/opinions on most things on here but that is a rather childish comment mate. Meh.

I will stay away from this thread from now I guess, unless I am making a "OMG this game is the best thing ever" post. I don't want to upset any Monster Hunter fans with my "scathing" critcism and "chav" opinions.

Perhaps "ruin" is too strong a word. It does make you wonder if Capcom ever considered putting one in and why they chose not to.

                            Too strong? You think?

Seriously, I do sympathise; I don't doubt a change like that would make it feel like a very different game. I don't want a lot of Demon's Souls changed to draw in a bigger crowd, for example. But I don't think it's a careful, reasoned decision so much as a case of 'well, our hardcore fanbase like it this way' and I'm pretty sure it's a huge factor in keeping the franchise from a bigger Western audience. I tried bits of the first PS2 game and one of the PSP games, I forget which one. They both felt horrendously intimidating. I can see the reason for the love, and if MH came to a console I actually owned I'd probably buy it... but as far as I see it for the newcomer there's a hell of a lot of beating yourself over the head until you accept a totally different (and arguably unintuitive) way of playing to be got through first.

I've got the US version arriving beginning of next week (hopefully before I go to USA for a few weeks).

When you get your copies (if you like) send me your online codes.
Same goes to anyone else with the US copy.

The only time I ever wished I had a UK Wii.

Can't decide whether to grab this or not. I love MHFU but have barely scratched the surface of it, and being able to take Tri online is so tempting!

And no thanks for a lock on, would change the game too much.
