    I was lucky enough to get the English version as a review copy, by the way, so for what my opinion's worth I'd say it's largely the same running through an HDFury cable. Other than AnXAn machines not working. Sega's localisations aren't the absolute best - they tend to write everyone in pretty much the same voice, unlike Square's team. Still, it's good enough, and never takes away from the awesomeness of the characters. Only point I grimaced was Akiyama's 'Who'd want to rape you?' joke... no. Just no. Thankfully nothing else along those lines.

      Yeah, that was pretty bad. Shame because, so far, Hana and her friendship with Akiyama has otherwise been a delight.

And no, I'm pretty sure it's only a 'design' thing to keep most cutscenes text in that it's 'designed' so they don't have to go to the trouble of recording and compressing that much voice, to say nothing of animating it all rather than just having people sitting there. I adore the series, but it's still an excuse for Sega to print money as cheaply as possible - make as few changes as possible, but still make enough updates the games stay relatively fresh even though they're re-using the same area over and over again.
      Based on what I've played 4>2>1>3. Regretfully had to sell Kenzan before I got the chance to play it properly. Surprised you've got 2 down as the worst, but hey ho!

      There's an element of lazyness considering just how little each game changes. But yeah, it's not often in videogames you get to enjoy a recurring environment with a constantly snowballing array of characters and distractions. It's a thing of byoody for me.

      Anyone know what the state of Yakuza of the end is? Did it get cancelled?

          I doubted they'd cancel Of The End entirely. And while I don't like the whole argument about 'We mustn't play games that talk about X, Y or Z in a time of crisis', it's a nice gesture of Sega to donate some of the profits to the Japanese Red Cross.

          And on a lighter note, I liked 2 fine - but the appallingly bad ending puts it firmly at the bottom of the list. I'm fine with the whole 'Grrr, so manly' thing, but even that has to show some restraint - as I never get tired of saying, 2's ending was like the unholy lovechild of MGS2, a WWE grudge match and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Just awful. Pretty much any of the boss fights in 4 comfortably blow it away.

          Kenzan it was multiple things -
          - the setting, and the way they still kept it the same but did it with skill and humour (go turtle racing!);
          - the darkness of a lot of the storyline (Majima even more insane than usual, child prostitution, Kazuma an indolent hobo looking for redemption etc.);
          - less of the really daft over-the-top stuff;
          - how they first made a big thing of the context-sensitive special moves (I never got tired of taking two enemies out at once with two swords);
          - the first use of revelations, and how well done they were;
          - that ending (one of my favourites in any game, ever, partly because it's a plot device so few games do at all, let alone well)...
          Really, really liked it. Still wilfully dated the way Yakuza always is, but it just all clicked a lot more effectively. Quite looking forward to Of The End, but I'd love them to try another historical spinoff.

            Just little correction there for you.

            How can anyone not LOVE it?

            You fight tigers! And dudes who were your enemies, then friends, then enemies then friends again. Or not? And there's a bomb. And you think everyone dies. But did they? And who is really everyone's friend or enemy?! And the TIGERS. Never forget the tigers.

            It was like watching porno without any sex. Awesome madness. Crazy times. SUNTORY TIMES!

              The tigers weren't part of the ending, and the other games were all more awesome, plus they made sense. Seriously, I felt ill sitting through that rubbish: the thing about the other games is they're quite often really well written under the macho chest-beating, so you get the best of both worlds. 2 built up what seemed to be a pretty good story, then threw it all out of the window and had everyone run around screaming nonsense for half an hour to finish with. Nooo. Just no. Seriously, if you want to see what 2 should have been, beat 4. It still has some incredibly silly twists, but they're far more cleverly worked into the story; and while the sweaty manliness is off the charts, it doesn't overwhelm the plot being wrapped up.

                Despite the lousy textures, sticky camera, comedy lip-sinc, invisible barriers, etc., I am completely hooked on this game. It's fabulous and utterly bonkers. Been wasting hours getting pissed on expensive Japanese whiskies, brawling drunkenly in the streets, stuffing my face, playing side missions and mini-games, many of which are side-splittingly funny (karaoke, massage). Mah-Jong and Shogi are dangerously addictive. One question, though: how the f*** do you play Pachinko? I read instructions several times for both the Aladdin's Cave and Street Fighter IV cabinets, and still ended up just gawping for more than an hour at all the flashing lights without knowing what the hell was going on...

                  I struggled with this to begin with when playing through it last year, the main gist of it is to get as many balls into a slot which is towards the bottom of the machine, each time you get a ball into that slot the screen in the middle goes into 'reach' mode which is where you get a chance for a jackpot, if you hit one then the machine releases extra balls and a larger slot opens up which collects any balls that go into it, this is basically your winnings which you cash in.

                      Started playing through the english version over the weekend. Most of the way through Saejima.
                      I'm finding Saejima fairly boring in english but the pay off of

                      revisiting Sunshine and Majima coming up is keeping me on track

                      .

                      The Revelations are even more confusing in English than they were in Japanese. I'd take a one in three chance over 'Err... okay'.

                        Uh? Traded in my review copy because I was desperate to buy Tactics Ogre... (still got the import, though) but I didn't find the revelations I saw at all confusing. Seemed fairly obvious all the ones up to the early part of Saejima's story just had one choice that was about fighting and two nonsense comments.

                          Managed to plough 5 hours into this yesterday during a lazy Sunday and still haven't finished Akiyama's section. I just find myself getting caught by little things. I'm like a magpie when it comes to the Yakuza games. I'll be walking along on a mission when I hear the locker key chime, find it and then see a sub-story which I then have to complete before moving on with the main mission but naturally another sub-story comes along...on and on it goes...I love it!!

                          A definite improvement over 3 which I also loved. The only thing that lets it down is, as has been said previously, some of SEGAs translation which resorts to over amounts of swearing and vulgarity when it isn't really needed.

                            I always presumed the tag line was supposed to be ironic or amusing. Mack has always seemed like a comedic character to me.

                              Agree. Tis sweary to the max and feels like a half-hearted way of making characters sound all tough like.

                              I just got onto the detective's (Tanimura?) story. He seems a bit of a douche, but in such an amusing way that I quite like the guy. S'cool how his fluency in other languages opens up other areas. I love how in cut-scenes he's always doing some sort of contrived pose to look cool, as if the developers actually intended for him to look like he's trying too hard...or I've got it completely wrong and it's a misjudged attempt at making him look badass.

                              He's great anyway, and all the plot-lines seem just about ready to collide and form some awesome set-pieces.
