Having never played Fallout 3, is it the view that I should play that rather than NV?

Depends, this is probably more visually appealing for most people as it has a blue sky and everything hasn't got a think film of green on it. That said I kinda enjoyed the bleak look of FO3. I think FO3 had more interesting character and missions and while open world gave some more direction in terms of a length tutorial and a place that from the start offered a house to you and some easy training missions.
I think this one has some good ideas and some interesting new enemies and characters but its worth playing FO3 first I think. This as its been said seems a massive expansion. Its good its just not improving on what came before or even expanding much on the basics.

is anyone else struggling with this game?
fallout 3 was never this tough. every quest I seem to start, I get half done before you get handed another quest to do in order to beat the first one. then you seem to hit a massive spike in difficulty and just end up having to give up on it and try a new direction to try and level up.
nightkins in a basement at level 6 are impossible unless ive been unlucky with the weapons ive found, another quest where I am taking a mountain path I come across giant radscorpions which I dont even scratch, rescuing slaves is impossible too as their captors are super powered.
the lack of getting anything finished and constantly getting sidetracked is boring me now.
am I remembering 3 differently? I am sure everything you encountered was only a little more powerful so while the enemies were tough you at least had a chance of defeating them?

Yeah, there is really horrible balance in this game. Another example is all the 50 skill locks early on.
The nightkins are incredibly difficult, I had a lot of luck using the incinerator against them (one hit allowed to burn off gets something like 4 bars of health off), other than that, use high dmg rifles and shotguns against them and aim for the head. Far too many of the enemies in this game have heavy armour.

As I said, you dont actually need to fight much at all to complete that task. Talk to the big Nightkin who is not far from when you first enter the basement (I think you turn left IIRC), then talk to the Ghoul who is defending himself in the chamber. The Ghoul wants to know the fate of his friend before he will leave, if you go to the jail cells you will complete the ghouls task and then talk to the nightkin and he and all the other nightkin in that area will go. You will probably have to fight a couple of nightkin overall, but you dont need to clear the whole basement of them. Kill one by any means necessary, get the Rebar club, and melee any other(s) you are forced to fight.
Ive not found it too difficult yet, Im only on level 6 or so, but I havent strayed too far. I wouldnt expect to be able to take on Deathclaws, Giant Radscorpions etc etc until Im much stronger. As soon as I see the red enemy marker, I do a VATs scan to identify what it is, then I give a wide berth if need be.Last edited by marcus; 27-10-2010, 15:09.

It kinda takes the anticipation and general uncertanty out of the equation, when you see that red blip on the radar and click vats to prepare yourself. It's a bad habbit I do all too often in FO3. Especially when it's dark at night and you are wandering the wastes with a group of Albino Rad Scorpions randomly chomping your vaultec nuts!
Dare you to seek out the red dot next time to see with your OWN eyes just what it is, rather than Vats

I took the help way out in the end....tbh I never found the guy before being attacked til I read this thread.
I have had to change my normal style in this type of game and not because I want to.
Because all the "bad" guys who I would prefer to kill instead of the "good" guys who I would like to help are so powerful or require very high stats so early on to outwit/avoid I am helping them and killing the easy targets instead just to make progress.
This game is so similar to 3 yet so very different for me...not in the good way either...only done 1 quest that you get an achievement for so still very early tho. Hopefully my experience improves...now having a companion has definitely started making it more pleasant at least.

I am sure I am in the minority but I seem to be enjoying this more than the last one. I seem to be at the same stage as most folks on here and have just about finished the Nightkin quest, I did finish it but managed to blow myself up on a mine. Had a good session tonight and the game seems to flow quite well, I am happy to just pad about discovering places and getting involved as much as I can. Still determined to be an all round good guy, even if I did steal over 300 caps from some quarry men.
