I have avoided the hype on this game 100%. I have read no previews. I didn't want to know about the things that are old hat to everyone else. So, bearing that in mind, and the fact that you've probably read it all before, a few observations...

The handling is very good. The four-or-so cars I drove handled differently and were easy to adapt to.
The visuals are often quite lovely. A snow track in particular was a joy to look at.
There's a lot of polish in a lot of areas. That Alfa hit the correct top speed and raced through the gears after a certain point - just ike the real thing. An impressive level of detail there.
    It feels resolutely GT.
The sounds are usually very good.
    The photo sites are nice.

There's a level of inconsistency about the sound. Entering a tunnel in the Alfa produced... nothing. No change in the sound whatsoever.
I simply cannot get my head around why the cars have been split into 'have a wank over this' and 'couldn't be arsed' categories. Premium? What? So many cars don't have an inside view, have jaggies on the frame, have flickering shadows behind the wing mirrors, don't project light from the headlights, etc. All these years and this was the best they could manage? It's poor form, whichever way you want to dress it up. Cars having an inside view has been a stock feature for at least 10 years. A ****ty sitting-on-the-roof view just doesn't cut it. V-Rally 2 on the ps1 had headlights on every car, hitting every surface in a different manner on the track editor. For a game over a decade later to send out a load of cars without even this basic graphical feature is piss poor. It's a shame because the top car models look amazing, but it makes the others look poor. Had it been a choice between doing a load more cars, and designing those photo ops, lovely though they are, I know which one would have got the boot (for me anyway).

I just got the Japanese version - surprised to get unexpected bonuses with it. There's another big book (308 pages) a la GT3, and a code to get some free DLC cars. I'm not sure if this is a set of 5 or a choice of 1 from 5, as I haven't done it yet. There's a Mclaren F1, SLS AMG, NSX GT500, GT-R GT500 and an Audi R10 all in 'Stealth' colours.

Did the UK get these as well? Preorder bonuses or something?

That was the Collectors edition in the UK, Darwock.

          Hmmm...

I hate License Tests and the ones in this seem to have been designed to annoy me!

Braking tests are all well and good, but there are no easy to spot reference points on the Top Gear Track to enable ideal braking.

I seem to have hit an impasse with the last test on the International C license. I have yet to even complete 2 laps let alone pass sufficient cars for a pass. The racing line is practically useless, especially when someone in front brakes early which usually results in them driving off into the distance due to having to take avoiding action.

Also the game is not aimed at people of average ability as there are prize cars for Bronze, another for Silver and another for Gold. For the avid car collector this means there are cars you cannot get in the game. At least with the PS2 gsmes there were ways around this.

At least in one of the earlier games you were given a pass if you kept failing and missing the target by a little.

Deja vu... oil changes on new acquisitions give a 5% power increase

Well it hasn't crashed, but it's not really improved the online options - you can now set a maximum BHP and min weight - but limiting the car type / class etc is still a no go.

Online in GT5 is appauling given this game has been in development for 6 years.
With this patch, can you now earn credit with online races?

1st-print Ltd Edition that be, what's the Apex book like? You get all five of those cars with that code.
              Kept you waiting, huh?

                Not that I noticed no.

I'm sure in the future there will be a DLC unlock code you'll be able to pay for to get them

The license tests are bugging me too, I always get bogged down trying to get the best possible result but I can't even get gold in the first test at the lowest level!

If I persist I'm gonna get fed up long before I get to the good stuff so I will have to force myself to accept bronze for the time being.

Joe - the Apex book is very nice but I did get a sense of deja vu flicking through the pages, as it is very similar in content to the GT3 one.

i've spent far too long doing the braking licenses. they are easily the hardest to gold imo.

also, i saw you playing it, darwock, but you didnt show up in the profiles section, i guess due to it being the japanese version?

Darwock, is the JPN version import-friendly? I mean it isn't entirely in Japanese text? I ask as when I saw you playing it earlier, the game name was written in Japanese, which is uncommon for recent PS3 games.

The PSP game displays in whatever language according to your system settings, so I wonder if this is the same?
                      Kept you waiting, huh?

I bought the JP version and it's completely user friendly in English, though the game title when on a network seems to be in Japanese.

Although from what Fuddle just said it's possible that different regions can't play online together. Hah. Well I for one have no intention of playing online anyway, proper online racing just isn't feasible with so many idiots in the world playing games.

The PSP game is region locked for online play, so I'd assume this is the same given the connectivity features and all.
