Is it just me or is fishing an annoyance at best? I got a level one quest to fish three of a particular type, and was given one piece of bait (have checked shops and no-one else sells more) - without using that it never even shows, and when I do use it the lure is used up as I catch a fish. I've lost about an hour to this already.
As per the recommends I've moved to the hammer, which is more interesting, but I'm still waiting for my MH epiphany...

As for more weapons. If you want somthing with a more complex system try the long sword, its a good beginner weapon and has a unique power bar mechanic that requires you to quickly chain hits to build up a meter and then "level up" that meter by depleting its power and connecting with the last bit of energy that you use from it.
The bow is also interesting, applying different coating to arrows for different effects.
Great Swords are hard to master, they not for beginners but are very rewarding when you learn how to get the timing right with them.
Lancers are great if you're Tank minded.
Dual Swords are probably the fastest weapon in the game, they also have a power bar, but it works a lot different to the long sword power bar.
You should try all the weapons really.Last edited by rmoxon; 27-03-2013, 16:34.

I couldnt get the Large Goldenfish to spawn on that early quest, until I looked it up and found you need to keep fishing with the Worm lure (found nearby, infinite supply) as just plain old normal fishing wasn't making them appear. The bastard thing is, on the way back to hand them in, I got jumped by those cat things and they stole 3 Goldenfish! I got 2 back by whacking them but had to go back to fish another. LOL. Stay well clear of them now.
My latest issue is with the capture the bear quest, I beat on it for ages and it ran away to another area and everything so I put the traps down and stuff, none of them worked. Out of traps too. Cancel quest. Looked up how to tell when they are capturable, someone on the internet said make the bone armor. I see 2 bone pieces at the blacksmith with +4 and +2 to perception (enemy dot flashes on the radar when it's capturable) so that's useless since I need +10 for the skill. Also useless is that I couldn't even craft those pieces anyway as I needed some items. There must be a million different items and ways to get them in this game how am I supposed to read "Mysterious Bone" and know where to even start? I know alot of you are MH vets but do you have to sit there with a wiki up to get anywhere?

Not at all buddy, but one of the advantages of being a vet is that the core systems have remained the same since the start of the series. We have a better idea of what items are available and where, even so, I still check the wiki from time to time. I think this is what essentially puts some people off the game, you need to learn where each item drops be it creature or gathering points. You also need to learn the traits of each monster, how it moves and attacks, as well as how you should move and attack taking into account the weapon you have.
Anyway for captures, my advice is to decide on a weapon and do the kill quest first. Get a feeling for how much punishment the creature can take before dying then do the cap quest. Now after you've dealt substantial damage to the monster, hold back and you should see it noticeably limp and in most cases limp away. That is the point to capture it, at this time it will only need two tranq bombs or three (?) tranq shots. Another bit of advice if if you do capture and tranq early, you can actually hit the creature while stunned and if you do enough damage it will capture provided you are fast enough.
Mysterious bones you get from get the creature nests in Moga woods, look for the bones piles and check those. But personally I wouldn't go with bone armor unless you really want it. Learning to capture without will be much more useful.

Some good advice going on in this thread.
I'm almost up to HR3 online, spent a large amount of last night with an HR2 group going through and helping each other out with quests. We effectively had a dedicated healer, with a hunting horn user that was using Health Recovery all the time. We pretty much didn't use any potions at all throughout the night.
The HR2 Urgent quest was brilliant fun, and between us we took both a Rathian and a Rathalos down in less than 10 minutes.
What the hell is up with these plate drops though? I'm trying to get a full set of Rathalos armour and the ONLY thing I need is 1 plate - Something which isn't dropping for love nor money, even with parts being completely smashed in. Gonna grind till it drops...
At the moment I'm using some hybrid of Duramboros Cap, Volvidon Armor, and Jaggi parts, coupled with Attack gems in every available slot - I've managed to push myself into an Attack Up Large buff, and things are falling down in solo play very easily.I'll be able to do it all over again with Rathalos parts once I've got this damn plate though...

Here's a handy guide, http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/3DS/M...re.asp?c=49635. And you should team up with vets as the article says that way knowledge and understanding are passed on and so new players learn, and just don't run away thinking the game is too hard, if i had a WiiU i'd gladly teach some people what little i know, so get a friend on here who's a vet and enjoy the game 100% more.

Yeah plate drops are where the Mo Hun grind kicks in. Chopping off the tail and capturing gives the best chance, but there isn't much in it between chopping the tail and killing it.
It had to be said, Capcom have done alot more this time round to reduce to grind. In addition to the farm, anyone whose guild card you have will show up in the multiplayer tavern (Tanzia) you can then send those guys on quests and they bring back the spoils. So it's worth dishing out Guild cards online and activating streetpass. Will be interesting to see if they are capable of bring back the rarer monster parts.Last edited by Riskbreaker; 28-03-2013, 09:55.

Capturing
As Riskbreaker explained, wait until they limp off into another area, <STOP ATTACKING>, get a trap down and hit it with tranq bombs when it gets stuck.
Bare in mind that using the same type of trap on a monster more than once means the monster will escape much quicker the second time. Always take a spare trap just in case. Never try to trap unless it's limping or you have Cap Guru and the monster indicator starts flashing.
Golden Fish
Snakebee larva (found in the same place as honey) and mega fishing bait combine to make Golden Fish Bait. Use it with Y like Jim said. You'll have to select it from your inventory specifically.
Armour-wise, my overall favourite is the Ingot armour (lower/upper, mainly for gunner) giving Recoil+1 and Thunder+1.

Oh dear god, how have I missed this series? It's horribly addictive and I only have the 3ds version. About to start to learn how to trap. And there are a million other things I can do. Looks great plays great. Actually thinking about trading it in and getting the digital version so I don't have to swap carts after playing LM2. This will not end well.

HAHA! New convert! Now imagine playing this with 3 other people online on your TV. Time to get a WiiU...
And yes, that's exactly why I went straight for the digital version.
When trapping, ALWAYS bring a spare trap and lots of tranqs. If you don't have the Cap Guru ability you have to (i) watch for them limping off and know it's time to trap and (ii) be aware of which area on a map they run off to sleep and recover as that's the easiest place to cap them. I guess I said most of that in the post above yours.
