It simply happened like this for me..
I could see Joel was losing it in desperation so as I went in I drew the gun on the doctor that approached me. He didn't react which was disappointing so I lowered it. The guy then moved towards me so I attacked him with melee and Joel stabbed him. At this point all I could think about was getting the girl out because I didn't want her to be there. I raised my gun on the other two and they were both away against the wall. I didn't want to kill them but had to get her out. No reaction at all so I walked to the table and picked her up.
You guys know how the scene goes next and I was enthralled and a little bit disgusted at the same time. Once reaching relative safety, the game obviously took over. My fears of Joel going to far were confirmed with his actions in the car park, needless murder of someone trying to do what she thought was right.
So many of the characters can be questioned in their actions. Henry leaving them early on was an act of pure desperation and is hard to blame him. Bill's homosexuality was handled really well too, I thought so from early on but it was handled well.
David was one I found most interesting. Based on the information we have, I cannot work out if he was evil or not. Being a cannibal was probably driven by the situation they were in. The advances to Ellie were the most interesting though. Yes she was too young but there was no real evidence they had seen a woman in a long time. Although he mentioned women and children, certainly didn't see any live ones with him at all, he could have been saying it to try to lure Ellie into joining him. Of course this does not excuse the probably attempted rape in the diner but again desperation can make people do all kinds of crazy ****.

I'm having to spoiler everything!
The genius of it was that by the time you got to the operating room, as the player you were already totally stressed and on edge from the battle it was to get there through the firefly masses. Or at least I was. As Marty said, when the first Doc came towards you, you were just so high wound from fighting all the fireflies that your adrenaline just instantly made you think "this ****er is coming at me!" BANG! dead. From there all the shouting, panicking and confusion saw me swing my gun straight to the second and BOOM! headshot. The third, the woman who was screaming about not wanting to die and cowering in the corner, I still walked over and lined her up for instadeath too. I'm not sure if it was because she was a woman, but I lowered the gun grabbed Ellie and you know the rest. To be honest, I understood what Joel did, it was difficult for him to let her in to his life and obviously he reached the stage where there was that father figure bond. Let's be honest, if you went through all that in reality, you'd be fairly tied to the person. When she asked for the truth before going back in to the community though, I did hope he would tell the truth and explain.
The David scene in the diner was pretty hard to stomach, even in videogame form. (In fact, many times I was surprised at how graphic the game was) The dialogue made me think he was more going to rape her in order to try and get some control over her and punish her for not following his will.
Jesus, some game eh?

Completed this last night. Absolutely loved it. Without a doubt my favourite game of the year so far. Possibly in my top 5 of the last 10 years.
Once it became apparent that Ellie would be die in surgery Mrs M0by & I had a brief discussion about what we would do, basically concluding 'Lets not think about it, and hope we're never put in that situation!'. Once I reached the operating theatre & she said to me, what would you do if it was Seb or Elijah (our two boys), I shot the two doctors & left the third cowering. Kind of regretfully, I didn't even hesitate much to see if there was even a way to save Ellie without further deaths, I just killed the two, grabbed Ellie and ran.
Afterwards I found myself justifying Joel's actions (which might as well have been mine, even though my choice was the only scripted outcome) by concluding that the surgery wouldn't have been successful or that the Fireflies would not have distributed any vaccine fairly and so on.
Just about to start a New Game Plus - having read that if you delete the patch, it is possible to start NG+ on Normal & then swap to Survivor at the end of Chapter One, to get a Survivor + completion.

Colin..
I also hoped he would tell the truth at the end. Although to be fair I was expected a lot more dramatic of an ending but when you analyse it the drama is more than there.
Back to David. Whilst not honourable, I never felt his intentions were to outright harm Ellie to start. He clearly wanted something he shouldnt have but I feel her reaction again caused him to flip. I think he wwould have raped and killed her in the end though.
Hard to defend a character like that but again the life they live causes these actions.

To be honest, I'm just amazed a game can bring about this kind of discussion in the first place. I have no doubt many people will play the game and just think the story is a crock of ****, but for me, when you take the plot to one side it's a new level in grown up entertainment for videogames. I think everyone knows it's not like me to rave about modern games, but this was awesome. So good in fact that I've given the borrowed copy back to my nephew and ordered a copy of my own, it's a title that deserves my cash and I will definitely replay it often enough to get my value for money.

Glad to see so many players have been impacted this much by The Last of Us. I truly believe that Naughty Dog are one of the best developers when leading the way for fantastic movie-like storytelling in their PS3 games. There is still some ways to go before the mainstream will understand how great of a medium gaming can be to connect with the audience but TLoU is a great step towards making that a reality. Together with watching the red band trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, I'm suped at the direction the best studios are taking with narrative and characters in their titles.
News of your next upcoming (hopefully PS4) title soon please Naughty Dog.

^ The amount of moaning in our MP session last night was off the gamer entitlement richter scale. Everyone neglecting basic game systems (scavenging, crafting, listening, sneaking) and claiming it was broken. Ryan shouting for 20 minutes that he couldn't spot because he didn't have 'the perk' was the last straw for me. It was so bad I would've executed myself if I could. Result: a half organized opposing team wiped us out every time. If they were listening in, that lot, I'm surprised they could still play for laughing!

Also why dont the bullets seem to connect sometimes? Incredibly frustrating.
Regarding the single player game, the story is its saving grace, even though it verges on the impossible/silly at times. Although some back drops look wonderful, technically its a bit of dogs dinner at times. I saw a clicker body warp to the bottom of an incline after i shot it, bits of the scenery missing when looking down from a skyscraper, gunshots not connecting, the as mentioned bad AI ( as in res evil running into scenery and the legs still moving bad). Why also does the voice actor sound almost identical to mr uncharted; is it his twin brother?
All said, i'd score it from a 7 to an 8.
