Lol at the youtube link! I've not played this yet, it doesn't seem like my kind of game tbh. I've never seen such polarizing views on a game before. Some people say its the best game they've ever played and say its a 10/10 and others say it's a stunning looking game with but with average gameplay. Looking at the gameplay footage on youtube it looks pretty average to me, with very simple gameplay mechanics dressed up with graphics. When I think of a game like the SNES version of Zelda, the amount of planning and creativity in the gameplay, the clever dungeon design, it seems leagues ahead of something like this gameplay wise. Atmosphere and story isn't everything in a videogame. Mainstream reviewers seem to forget this. Bioshock Infinate 10/10? Are you effing kidding me?! It's got good graphics and a cool story but its an average FPS at best. Portal 2, now there's a game with creative gameplay design!

Anyway, there's a way to glitch the game to select Survivor + difficulty without having to go through Survivor mode first.
Steps:
1. As long as you've completed the game, select 'continue new game +' and select whatever difficulty.
2. Play through prologue and get to the point where you control Joel. You'll notice that when you go to change difficulty, you can't as it's locked.
3. Save and quit to title screen.
4. Now select 'chapters' and then 'hometown' an select difficulty 'Survivor'
5. Play through again to get to Joel and check in the options menu... et voila, it's now set on Survivor. And more importantly Survivor + as you now have all the upgrades to Joel (apart from listen mode which is disabled) and all your weapon upgrades.
There you have it. You have to play through the prologue again, but at least you can play Survivor + off the bat.

I know I'm to blame for my ridiculous amounts of game overs... I just can't bring myself to use a health pack in fear that I'll find a can of food or I'll get a health refil if I'm close to the chapters end and I don't feel like wasting bullets just incase. I spent most of this game walking around unable to pick up anything due to having maximum of everything.
I've now convinced myself to take a different approach. I'm dealing with each encounter as if my life truly depends on it and the game is a hell of a lot more fun haha. I run out of bullets at times and I'm actually crafting things. At first I thought I was being tactical saving all my things but after you stealth kill like 14 guys then get caught and die it becomes tiring... especially with the dodgy checkpoint system. Now I find when I go in there and think its me or them I'm a hell of a lot more tactical and fights tend to go my way and I'm not as low on resources as I'd fear.
The only upgrades really needed for Joel are the health upgrades, and weapon sway.
Though it's advisable to not use the health upgrades straightaway as these act as an instant medi-pack when you upgrade. For me the two areas I would use these are during the
two sewer fight sections
.
- Try not to use guns for regular fights. Use stealth strangle at every available opportunity. Unfortunately with Survivor you're going to have to 'game' the system, when it comes to fights. A lot of trial & error and restarts unfortunately.
Essentially what you're doing throughout the regular battle situations is stockpiling ammunition (which there is even less of in Survivor) for the forced battle situations later on. The first time I fired a gun was the
hanging upside down/ Bills town trap
. Ammo drops from enemies are nearly non existant. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. Ellie will sometimes throw a box of ammo to you, however this is not really reliable and doesn't happen often enough to exploit.
Make use of bricks and bottles for quick-aim-throw-stun and then rushing to the opponent and then pressing triangle then square for take down for regular humans/ Runners.
Taking down alerted Clickers is different. Since you can't strangle them. Ideally you should never engage them whenever possible. However there are a few instances where they are forced into combat
jump starting the car in Bills town/ escaping the sewers come to mind
.
When you have NPCs with you, use them.
They will eventually get the kill, and just keep 'kyting' the enemies towards the NPCs so they get in a grapple situation at this point two things can happen. Either they push the enemy away or get a red cross over their head. Either way it leaves you to get a easy melee attack on them, as when they are pushed back, they have a momentary 'stun' animation which leaves you a decent opening for a triple melee. Or you can quick-throw a brick/ bottle to stun and then press triangle > square.
For Clickers, if they grab an NPC and they have a red cross over their head, equip a brick and triple brick them to death. Now sometimes the brick will disintegrate on the first hit. Also, be mindful that bricks and bottles respawn after about a minute or so.
On the last stretch in the
Hospital during sniper alley
I had more than enough ammunition to burn through dealing with the remaining lot. Almost spoilt for choice on how to deal death.
- When in Pittsburgh and during the lobby Generator fight make sure you:
1. Get the keycard first, and deal with the x4 Stalkers that ambush you.
2. Go to the door and keycard slider and press triangle on both of them, as it saves you doing it later. In doing so, a Stalker will jump you, so kindly return the favour with your finest tungsten steel.
3. As soon as you start the generator, go straight up the ramp on the right hand side. Now you have two options. Either you can chance your luck and go straight for the door, and hope the Bloater hasn't got there yet (which I did) or, you can take the slight 'U' bend on the right hand side of the corridor (where the washing machines are) and wait until the infected go to the generator, and then slink through to the door.
- Don't waste shivs on Clickers.
Keep the materials to bind them for opening locked doors.
There's a trick to get infinite shivs/ and melee weapon modification. Definition of infinite is that you need:
- a weapon with a weapon modification.
- another weapon that you can pick up and swap.
- and at least one full set of scissors and bandage to create a shiv or weapon attachment.
Needless to say, you need to be at Bills Town to have access to make weapon attachments.
First, you:
1. equip the standard weapon.
2. create shiv or weapon mod (now you'll be out of materials)
3. pick up weapon with modification, and now you have the materials in your rucksack to create another shiv/ weapon mod.
4. repeat step #1
You can do this for nail bombs. But, the only thing that will respawn back are the scissors and not the explosive material.Last edited by jimtendo; 25-06-2013, 18:20.

Hard difficulty didn't have it either.
One other thing to mention is that the enemies are not necessarily tougher, it's just that you take more damage.
Clickers and Runners are much more sensitive to crouch walking speed, in that you pretty much have to be at your slowest. before you could get away with nearly full speed crouch walk.
Bloaters are relatively easy.
Don't waste ammo by targetting the weak 'sore' spots. Funnily the game does give you an ok amount of materials to make molotovs (nail bombs not as much) and just chuck a couple of molotovs or nail bombs the a shotgun shell or two will down it. Nail bombing it will disable it throwing those spores.

And Yeah, Bloaters, Molotov them and then shotgun to the face, and they are down in 1-2 hits.
The shotgun is the best weapon in the game.
The combat in this game is very fun, I don't know why some people are saying the gameplay isn't great and the game gets by on story, that's not true at all.Last edited by rmoxon; 25-06-2013, 19:39.

You shouldn't spam bloaters with molotov or flames though. I think that after the first molotov or flamethrower burst hits, hes invincible for a while until he starts walking again, It takes 2 molotovs to kill them. Or 4 or 5 short bursts with the flame thrower. On Normal at least.
Shotgun damage during his burn animation does seem to stack though.
