That is very true, in the end didn't bother using any special moves aside from an occasional uppercut or fireball although I have to say I did feel quite satisfied when I smashed his face in for the last time and won the battle

Yep, I noticed that. And when you lost, the AI is "reset", as it were, and they go back to being easy to beat when you continue!

Did anyone manage to beat *any* character on Rise of the Robots on the hardest difficulty setting. I seem to remember they took virtually no damage no matter what you did, and it was nearly impossible to drain enough energy to kill them in the timelimit - even if by some fluke you stayed alive.

Haha, **** the hardest setting I couldn't get that puny, scrawny waste of space robot you had to go off the second fight on the normal setting... heralded as the first game to learn from how you fought, that ****er just reacted to everything you tried and destroyed you because of it. We forget that a hell of a lot fo the time, the AI KNOWS what we are trying to do before it happens on screen so can react every time if it sees fit. In the case of Rise of the Robots it just didt let you win no matter what... probably cause there was no game code for anything further than level 2 but they released it anyway... just made sure you didnt get any further than was available !!

I second that, it was just ridiculous the ammount of skill and manovering it took to take it down, I never did kill it with its freaky baby doll head *shudders*

I'm pretty sure I finished it on normal. That's how starved I was for good games on the Amiga!!! LOL!
It just used to block everything, I seem to remember you could beat it by just opening an endless can of whuppas on the AI and wearing it down. But it doesn't help if he takes no damage while blocking.

I'll have to emulate that game and see how hard it really was. Not sure I want to though :/

Also on Amiga there was Shadow Fighter. Now Shadow Fighter vanilla was bad enough, but Shadow Fighter AGA was insane. Even with the cheapest character (Slamdunk) there was no way I could ever beat the final boss - although I got a round off him a few times.
Hmmm.. with hindsight I can imagine that would be a lot easier with a joypad.

Agreed the last boss is an absolute nightmare and an even a physical strain due to the amount of humming bird manouvres required. It took me somewhere in the region of 2-3 hours constant retrying to finally topple the bugger.

Usually I would have given up hours ago but the whole of Gun Valkyrie took so much effort that I really wanted to see it through. A few of the preceeding levels were actually harder than the last boss I found.

Oh and regarding Gill, he's easy when you know how. Most characters with a charge attack like Urien's chariot rush can absolutely destroy Gill. With more orthodox characters like the fireballers, just keep it simple, don't fireball that much, use lots of mid / strong sweeps, when he's down use command comboss as he gets up. Only use dragon punches when he jumps, not uppercuts. Don't bother jumping at him much unless it's for the old cross up. When he regenerates, keep dashing forward and use a standing weak punch, nothing fancy required.

                  Metroid Prime in Metroid Prime.

Bloody hard!!! The sole reason I still haven't finished it yet.

Also, the last boss in Rez gave me quite a nasty cramp in one of my hands. Just thinking about that boss makes me cry salty tears of anguish!

I gave up on killing the new prince of persia end boss, he wasnt really that hard just they want you to do some platforming while he's shooting at you randomly, I couldnt see the fun in it really so I just never bothered killing him.

all the platforming up until then was awesome though.

A mate of mine has given up on the exact same bit.

I did that with the end of game boss on pitfall, whole game was nice not overly challenging, then BAM end of game boss was seemingly impossible, gave up about about 50 odd attempts an jus sold the game on. I know that makes me weak, but I jus don't enjoy games that seem impossible.

the last level in streets of rage, not impossible but bloody hard considiring you fight all the bosses again and you can't use the special attack.

As a related issue, very difficult bosses can be a real stumbling block and a deterent to continue with a game. But my real pet hate in games is getting stuck, not due to the difficultly level, but due to things like obtuse puzzles, not having the right key/item etc, or just not knowing where the the hell to go. Obviously RPGs have these in elements in spades as they're par for the course and the main reason I steer well clear. But other types of games seem to be full of these types of obsctacles and it drives me mad.

Looking up an FAQ is frequently the only way forward but this can often take longer the playing the game itself, and having to run upstairs to syphon through some faq written by a silly yank more interested in listing legal garbage is not my idea of fun. I relish a gaming challange, but only when that challange is one of reactions or joypad deftness. Recently even great series' like Metroid, Casltevania etc... have had me totally pissed off, baffled, and going round in circles.

So, bring on the rock hard bosses, as long as I can actually get into the fekkin' room to fight them.
