I thought the PSP did 500 FULL charges?

So plugging it in twice to go from 50% -> 100% only counts as one full charge. Trickle-charging it multiple times from 90% wont count each one as a mark off the 500 total until you've done ten 90% trickles (etc).

Picked up a PSP the other day. Never been interested in it until i saw my bro in law's. Really liking what it can do. I got Virtua Tennis 3 and The Megadrive Collection but im mostly taking advantage of the movie capabilities as im not much of a gamer. I have a long commute in the morning and i think its amazing that i can sit on the train and watch Terminator 2 on the way to work. So far ive ripped a load of Futurama episodes and a few movies (Pulp Fiction, T2, War of the Worlds) and im really impressed by the video and audio quality.

The PSP is my favourite console of all the ones I own.

My DS / DS Lite hardly ever get touched, despite the fact that I have all the highly regarded games for them. I can see the quality of the DS games, but the PSP is infinitely more fun to play, in my opinion, in the same way that I'd rather rent The Loin King from the mucky video shop than go and watch The Nutcracker at the Bolshoi.

To be honest the PSP needs a DS Lite style update. Even then it won't hope to even approach DS sales but as long as it makes a profit for developers, which it is in fact doing, then it will survive, despite its flaws.

- Use homebrew videos without any artificial limitations on resolution
- Use emulators
- Play PSOne games with your PSP

Only changes that PSP needs is better d-pad and get rid off UMD. Sure, UMD could be potentially good format, but unfortunately any physical, moving parts ramp power consumption up by 40-60 percent. Plus all competing alternatives would guarantee better load times.

Even then it won't hope to even approach DS sales but as long as it makes a profit for developers, which it is in fact doing, then it will survive, despite its flaws.

PSP has been haven for western developers, but then again, there is only one western DS title that has rating over 7.5 on gamerankings, which tells also why western DS games aren't selling that well.

You're lucky because 3.03 is the highest version that can be downgraded to 1.5, which is what you need to do to install the custom firmware. You'll need to find a copy of the original unpatched version of GTA Liberty City Stories and then can follow the tutorial here. Once you're on 1.5 you want to find and install 3.30 OE-A which is the latest custom firmware.

I'm just getting back into my PSP because I've belatedly discovered the CPS-1/2 and Neo Geo emulators for it. Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Marvel vs Capcom at 60fps on a handheld? Yes please.

Excellent. I bought a used copy of GTA:LCS when i got my PSP so i will have a look and see if i can downgrade.

Not in the sense that it can be downgraded. There's a hacked version of 3.30 out, yes, but there's no way to downgrade or run unofficial code on it.

Lately I'm seriously considering getting a PSP, mainly due to the CPS-2 emulator (Progear on the go = dream come true).

So what are the chances of me buying a brand new UK system and it being downgradable?

And is there a way to check?

I've got two brand new UK PSPs, white and black which I've downgraded successfully and then installed custom firmware on both - 3.10 OE.

The UK Killzone Packs were originally firmware 2.6, and I bought one of those last week. My local GS had a large stock and I fancied the 4GB mem stick. My white PSP was 2.8. Either way if you upgrade to 3.03 you can then succesfully downgrade and then back up to 3.10 OE custom firmware.

I'm happy to sell one of mine if you're interested - it will save you the hassle of trying it yourself (although its not terribly difficult) - they are both in mint condition, and less than a week old. Just PM if interested.
