      Wait, it's pronounced Wee?

I just assumed it was Why as that is at least less stupid soundinf.

And again I ask, what exactly was wrong with the name Revolution?

I remember championing the controller myself on the old GTM forum, and opinion seemed split at the time, but eventually people came round. Being a qualified Engineer I remember trrying to explain logically how it would work. I was probably just trying to convince myself more than anyone. I'm interested to see it action aswell.

This name thing is a different kettle of fish and like you mentioned this will affect all those people who were at 6s and 7s about buying into the brand. Its a bit sad but this is more than likely going to turn the 'cool' 'I-podder market' off even more. Thats what convinces me it will backfire because in effect Nintendo have turned off the very people they were trying to attract. I couldnt agree more.

The reception for the controller went from indifference to positivity. I just feel its too late in the day to get this so called 'cool brand' market to accept this name now. I have to admit though nintendo arent averse to shooting themselves in the foot, and then turning it to their advantage. I just get this overriding feeling that this name thing is a bridge too far.

Edit:- This thread does move fast.

Hahaha! Well they have made my day more fun anyway

I think it's probably quite clever. At least it is a unique spelling so good for web searches.

Remember people We're in the wrong for not 'getting' it according to various Nintendo spokespeople.

Another error. If you're already on PR damage limitation surely that tells you something is wrong? Secondly, if you're more or less on the defensive accusing people of not 'getting' it yet and having to adjust... then, oh dear. Successful branding doesn't work on people being told they're out of the loop.

It won't be long before searches for Wii turn up dodgy porn sites.

Que hysteria and lawsuits. The name itself is almost a lawsuit waiting to happen.

i.e. headlines: Wii encourages kid to urinates over console. Gets electrocuted. Etc. etc.

Wii inspires mass urinated-based bullying over Nintendo-owning school friends.

Damn, some of these are so catchy... anyway... I think you get the drift.

so lets see, all the nintendo die-hards said they'll buy one no matter what the name is... market loss = 0 so far

                      the only way is up

Given the logo itself, Iam sure that Nintendo, with some clever adverts for posters and for TV, can win people over with the simple LOOK of it, since that is what has won me over, how it LOOKS.

When I look at it I dont concentrate on how it sounds, rather on how it looks, and I really like the way it looks. It is sooo different and un-English that nintendo has a real chance for some heavy marketing to really stamp the image of it on "casual" consumers?minds as a symbol of the console.

I read on another forum a list of questions/statements that we will end up saying, such as "Lets play Wii" etc etc, and how it would NEVER ever sound right. Well, the fact is that since the name is Wii, you WILL have to say those types of phrases if you want to refer to the console, and it will lose a tiny bit of its "horridness" or "wackiness" each time it is used like that.

Seeing it now in texts written about the console, rather than just about the name itself , I personally am already starting to get used to it.

All this is not to say that I think it is the best name they could have come up with, just that it IS the name they have come up with, and I hardly view it as a problem for me, I am still going to buy the thing, and the sheer distinctiveness of how it LOOKS is enough of a starting point for Nintendo to, as I said earlier, really market it to death as a new brandname.

Here's the latest theory doing the rounds. Is Wee just an elaborate rouse, or are the die hard fans just clutching at the slimmest of chances?
Crazy? Here is the first clue, “By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it’s like to play the games begin to come in.” Allowing your audience time to vent is not SOP in a name announcement, and also telegraphs that Nintendo knows what a stinker this name would be.

Second, it’s not possible to engineer a worse name for this product.

Third, and this is a big one, there are no trademarks registered by Nintendo nor by any dummy corp in the U.S or over there for Wii. This is unprecedented for Nintendo and it is not possible that his is an oversight. If Wii were the name, they would have registered it. In fact, no new trademarks have been registered by Nintendo at all. This leads us to conclude that Nintendo has in fact registered the real name under a dummy corp, which is SOP when trying to keep a name a secret prior to launch.
I'd like to believe it's some kind of viral marketing coup, but this certainly hasn't been Nintendo style in the past.

This years Wee3 will tell all I guess

The name is sooo bad, it's hilarious. A real example of the Japanese not understanding how ridiculous something will sound outside Japan.

Other Nintendo consoles have had pre-production names that weren't very good, but Revolution or Rev, was a great name. I would love a console called the ' REV ' ... it just sounds really catchy, and cool!

At the end of the day it's the machine and games that count, but I will always chuckle at the name Wii!

ok they obviously had their reasons not to call it Revolution so what can you people come up with that they could call it instead of urnine?

At the end of the day though, as long as the game are good one couldn't careless.

Lindberg is a pants name , but I couldn't careless the game look PIEHOT
I never liked this likes of SEGA CD (Mega was so much better) and Genesis, but the games made up for it , Dreamcast wasn't that great either

With luck the games will do all the talking , but NCL street cred in schools and onthe streets , will be nothing
