As in repeating models? No, the first game avoided that and had a profile for each and every person, as well as a schedule. The second game partially did this, but there were hundreds (if not thousands of models) which repeated. It was a bit jarring seeing one of the homeless people you'd encountered in Wan Chai following you all the way to Guillin. :P

I thought it was a small joke by reversing the stalking you could do in the first game. Or maybe not.

I don't rate to that degree, more like a 3 tiered level.

      1. Won't play again.
      2. Play occasionally usually failing to complete.
      3. Play frequently or to completion/exhaustion.

So many of others 10's in this thread are in category 1 for me, just goes to show the diverse needs and likes of gamers.

Yep, that's what I meant. I was so impressed by that at the time. I still am really. They felt like real people with their own lives.

                LOLz!

Anyway, a 10/10 game for me doesn't have to be perfect or flawless , but it is simply a game that, for me, represents the pinnacle of videogames and is a defining piece of software.

                Super Mario World
                Tempest 2000
                Mario 64
                OOT
                Metroid Prime

                Nintendo FTW

I stand by my comment that if there ever was a game that had no flaws and was indeed "perfect" there would be no need for any other games to be made.
That's not what I was meaning. In your original post you said that 10 denotes the perfect game. I disagree, and think that a game could be awarded a 10 even if it's not perfect, it's just that I personally wouldn't give any game that I've played to date a 10, even allowing for flaws and imperfections, nothing I've ever played is more than a 9. 10 is special, perfect is something else altogether. Hope that clarifies things. I also don't think that if the perfect game/sandwich/movie was ever made that it would render all other games/food/music redundant - although it's impossible to prove one way or another until perfection is achieved in any medium.

                      This is a fascinating thread.

Not really to keen on the scoring systems it causes more disagreements and arguments then i care to mention.

I did quite like cvg's original high five system though

By definition if you state you would NEVER give a game a 10 then you are then actually only scoring out of 9, therefore the 9 is equivilent to a 10 in a scoring system where you are scoring out of 10.

I've edited that last post to better reflect what I was trying to say - not that I'd never give any game a 10, just that nothing I've played so far is worth a 10.

I'm reserving a 10 for something better than anything I've played to date - I could quite easily bump all my '9' games up to 10 and recalibrate my thinking on everything, but why bother?

I've played great games, and really enjoyed them, but I still wouldn't give any of them a 10 - maybe I'm being too harsh, but 10 in my mind would be utterly brilliant, not just great or good. The game I've probably enjoyed most out of all the games I've ever played and spent the most time on would be SR2 on the Dreamcast. I still play it 6 years after getting it, but there's no way it's a 10. It's good, but there are a thousand ways it could be improved. The handling is almost perfect (for me) which is why I like it so much but there's a lot else that's way off the mark. If that's my personal benchmark because it's the game I enjoy most and still stands the test of time and nothing else I have ever played can beat that then nothing else could be judged a 10.

There are better games technically, there are better games visually, there are games with more content etc... but none that I play more and keep coming back to. I would have given Sonic 2 a 10 at the time, but I never play it nowadays, despite owning it on several platforms. This is why I'm trying to be objective. If a game is worth a 10 when I'm playing it, does that make it a 10 game forever? I personally don't think so because a 10 should be timeless and keep me coming back - SR2 was never a 10, even when I first got it, and it never will be, but for all it's imperfections it's the one game that keeps me playing after all these years. Other people will feel differently, but this is why personal opinion and forums are so good.

Yes its good that personal preference plays a part and everyone has differing criteria that needs filling before any game can constitute a perfect ten score. I'm also of the opinion that 10 is an unattainable figure due to the many differences people see in the games they play.

Whats one mans wine is another poison, so 10 shouldnt be given to any game with that in mind, but there's nothing wrong with games trying to aspire to it because that only helps the us players, in the long run.

I have games that I would give a ten someone else wouldnt so review scores are never an exact science. Good thread though. Perhaps 9.99999r would best suit the games that are near, but not quite perfect.

I think for thats why magazines for me now are mostly obsolete

on the internet i can get many opinions on a game what they like and what they did not like and then i can base my own decision if the game is worth getting
