When doing the updates this morning the screen went black for about 30 seconds, I just left it and it came back fine. Maybe people are hitting the power button when this happens?

How did this happen? Talk us through it.
I've read that formatting the HDD by putting it into another PS3 then putting it back into the borked PS3 fixes the problem but I don't have another PS3 handy to try it out yet.

Just an update on my UK 40gb PS3. Now doesn't get by the startup screen and is totally goosed. Called customer services and i'll be getting a replacement console next Thursday. Bit pissed to be honest.
This all came from me downloading the 2.4 firmware this morning. On the plus side, i'll be getting a 160gb hardrive all ready to stick in my new machine when it arrives.

Just a wee bit more info. The PS3 doesn't turn on with the PS button on the wireless controller or the blu ray remote, so it needs to be turned on with the on/off button on the machine itself. When you do that, the wee intro tune plays the background appears but that's it. No XMB. Tried turning it on with a game in but same result.Last edited by Crocski; 02-07-2008, 16:30.

Not bricked, its some sort of data error
While it seems like every time the PlayStation 3 undergoes a firmware upgrade is plagued by people trying to blame broken systems on the update, last night's 2.40 update seems to have caused genuine issues with many posters over at the official PlayStation forums. Owners of PS3s in all shapes and sizes have been…
Remove harddrive format it and start again.
Safest option would seem to be doing the update via a memory stick etc.

Sorry to hear some have bricked. Doing mine now, hope it's OK....
Been reading the issue with the PS3 taking over a game and putting in custom soundtracks is because MS own a patent for that. Don't you like these ridiculous patent laws! It's OK if a dev does it apparently, and Sony have added that functionality.
