I'm still surprised that no manufacturers have thought to have two flash banks for firmware updates to avoid these problems, given how cheap flash memory is now. I mean, even Xbox modchips had that because it was a cheap precaution and made it essentially unbrickable.

Just a wee bit more info. The PS3 doesn't turn on with the PS button on the wireless controller or the blu ray remote, so it needs to be turned on with the on/off button on the machine itself. When you do that, the wee intro tune plays the background appears but that's it. No XMB. Tried turning it on with a game in but same result.
Might back up my HDD before the update tonight, just to be safe.

Still bloody annoying for people though and it's a really strange problem as I'm not sure how it could have corrupted the data on the hdd? Isn't the hdd just a storage device for the download while the internal memory would surely be used to store firmware?
It's good to hear that it's a relatively harmless problem though although I know how annoying it is having to download loads of things as I had to do it after starting up a new ID recently.

I've updated via the memory stick and 2.40 has given my Japanese ps3 the hdmi screen flicker problem, so every five seconds on the dashboard it flicks between the background and a black screen now.
I've tried all the normal fixes including removing the hdmi lead from the back of my tv and the ps3, resetting the hdmi settings and changing from component back to hdmi.
Nothing seems to have worked, luckily I have a ps2 component lead otherwise I would be in the land of very pee'd off with Sony instead of being mildly annoyed.

Just done mine and everything went fine.
I think the in game XMB is pretty good, and the trophies work well. I do like the trophy stats that you can view in your friends list, its all presented very nicely.
Let the Trophy whoring begin!
Got my first 4 just now on Stardust, all were bronze but i was very close to a silver.

Impressed with how quickly the XMB appears, the 360 can hang a while. Lots of options there. Now just need more Live like functionality, this is a great addition but not enough yet. I have to say again how impressed I am with the smoothness of it, better than I'd hoped.
Now I need a better indication that I have Friend Requests / Messages pending, as I only just noticed a whole pile of them after John mentioned I'd not accepted his Request yet.

When you get a message it a pop up tells you that it's arrived and it also shows you envelopes next to the message box and next to the friend that has sent them.

Can't really remember how it worked on Live but I think now they've got this started that they really need to just tidy up small stuff like that to try and equal it.
I'd like to have more options than Online & Not Available too. I complain about this a lot but the avatars are probably the worst you can imagine and need to be sorted out.

Yeah, we need custom avatars - on Live, you choose (or buy) a default avatar, then have another custom one for your Friends. It's great
On Live, you have the Messages and Friends boxes, with a number clearly displayed in it. First place you when logging on. XMB has a lot of dead space, I don't want it cluttered like Live, but a corner could be used with little icons for Friends and Messages and a number next to it. Neat and clear.
The Trophies are interesting, but the screens you have looking at a Friend's Trophies and Profiles looks amateurish and barren to me. I like info, I like stats. I want an option there to immediately list all their games played, and even how long on each game - just to make us all feel better for wasting our lives away
