My PAL machine just packed-in while I was playing Crackdown. No rings of death or lock-ups, but it appears the disc-drive has broken. Made a horrible grinding sound before it suddenly just stopped spinning, almost like something had snapped.

Doesn't read any discs now, or even eject properly. In fact I think I was quite lucky to get my disc back out.

Just hope I can find the receipt...

If you can't don't worry about it - by law it's up to the retailer to prove that you didn't buy it from them not vice-versa !

And if you phone MS they just ask for date of purchase - anything within the last 12 months will get you a free repair !!!

I found the receipt so it'll be going back to Argos. Small print says all products are guaranteed against manufacturing defects for 12months so I'll be expecting it to get replaced no problem. Hope they let me keep my existing HDD though. Got my saves backed-up, but would be a pain having to download all the updates, DLC and Arcade games etc again.

To be honest, would argos even check the box...? Would it be worth going to a different argos and trying it on? If you wanted to be honest, you could always go back again with the NEW HD and say "Sorry I forgot to put this in the box of the one I returned!"...

LOL could be worth a try. I'll definitely be taking it back with a 3rd party component lead in place of the real one.

Mine's on its way to MS at the moment - they don't want the HDD sending (or anything else, even the faceplate). I'd just explain to Argos that you need the stuff off the HDD and they'll let you stick the new one in with your borked machine. I'm sure they don't care.

Third time the 360 is in repairs now. Where can I send a formal complaint?
The call center monkeys are useless.... MS HQ

Yeah, theres no reason whatsoever they should deny you your existing hard drive. All Microsoft care about for a return is that every component is present, doesn't matter which HDD is with it so they should swap it over for you.

Sorry to hear about that mate!
From what I've read online (which may not be true) it really doesn't matter who you complain to as you'll get the same response as you will from the call centers.

Just got my 360 back from repair. Here's hoping it lasts longer this time. I've got some serious catching up to do.

I've checked the serial number and I can confirm that I do have my own system back. Good thing to because it was cosmetically perfect.

So I'm trying to get my launch machine fixed for my old man.

Call centre, absolutely lovely sounding lass called Ingrid give her details etc go through what's going to happen (I need to find a box, I need to arrange uplift - you get the drift not very impressive customer service).

Then we get to the end of the call :

"OK I need your card number"

"Yeah no problem - maestro card"

"Er - we only have Visa/Mastercard/AMEX"

                        "I don't"

"Er - You will need to get somebody to call back - it would be useful if you call together"

"No can do - I'm going to have to ask my parents now and they live hundreds of miles away"

"Er - You can just phone back with the details"

                        What a ****ing shambles.

Oh and apparently the repair gets you a 12 month warranty - only good thing about the call bar Ingrid (I so want to call her back so lovely was her manner and laugh).

Lots of people think MS customer service is a shambles so you ain't the only one, mate.

After cleaning it all out using a vacuum cleaner and pipe cleaner, I put the machine back together again, and where as before I couldn't leave it powered up for more than 90 minutes without it overheating and switching itself off, last night I left it on for around 6 hours without any problems.

It's too soon to say if doing this has saved my machine but it's definately helped and I recommend anyone with an overheating 360 outside it's warranty do the same.

Well, what I did above only prolonged by 360's life by a few weeks as last night it started overheating again. Contacted Microsoft this morning and it's going in for repair, I only hope the fact I broke the Microsoft seal when taking it apart won't be a problem.

Just my luck it should pack in a couple of days before Forza 2 is released. Have a good mind to buy a replacement console from Argos and take it back when my old one's returned.

No return on consoles at Argos

I also love the way every ****er likes a free rental these days. I doubt you'd be too impressed if you bought a console as new and found it had been used

There goes that idea then. Time to dust down the Wii.
