Wait... you mean you were upset before because the console just locked up? That is not a sign of death or anything like it. It's far more likely to be a problem with the software - either the game or the OS Dashboard.

If you check a few pages back I posted a diagnostic to tell you why your console did that, but it has to be exhibiting the lights to test. It may well not do it again, although if it recurs, it's far more likely to be a serious problem. Those lights often mean overheating. It could be caused by a loose connection.

I hope it's not the case, but it really does seem that the majority of early 360s are doomed to failure sometime in the first year or so. I bet someone at Microsoft got crucified.

well i was upset because i just figured the worst was about to come.

at my work we've got about 30-40 premiums sitting there, most of them have the 3/4 red lights, and even more cores than that. seeing those on a daily basis doesn't give me much hope, that's all.

i did the wireless connect+eject button thing when it first happened this afternoon, which i'm assuming you're talking about, to get the diagnostic code and it is indeed the 4142 (or 0102, i figure 4 lights = 4 but apparently not ) one which means 'hardware fault' or something along those lines. if it was overheating, etc, then i'd probably try a few things first.

i disconnected the hd, av and psu, unplugged the psu and left it for about 10 mins, hooked everything up and lo and behold the lights are still there.

i'm not too fussed as i knew this would happen sooner or later. at least i'm lucky it's lasted this long - if it was a first-day thing then i'd be a bit miffed

Do you know of anyway to stop these lock ups? or is it just the case it only happens on certain versions of the 360/games?

It didnt bother me at first, but its starting to get on my nerves. So far my new 360 hasnt locked up yet (touch wood)

Depressingly, no. I live in hope that Microsoft can fix this with a software update. Although probably the most reliable fix would be a future software mod along the lines of linux, although that would obviously get you banned from Live.

Because Microsoft is so secretive about it's software no-one really knows what the problem is. If only they'd be more open, we'd be able to help them fix it.

My first lock-ups were with Quake IV. This was definitely the game, as I could get around the problem by re-loading from an earlier savefile. It just got progressively worse from there, but most of it was related to using the Guide whilst connected to Xbox Live. People used to rave about the service, but all I've experienced of it (from the technical perspective) has been an air of complete ignorance.

Since getting my new 360 I've absolutely hammered Hitman, and managed to provoke a lock-up the other night when trying to use the stun gun. It just froze when the gun connected.

Anyway, one piece of advice is not to use the guide whilst connected to Xbox Live, and try not to load new pages too quickly. I once got a lockup when I accidentally hit the guide button when a notification about a friend coming online popped up. Also, I read that using the guide whilst on a loading screen was a bad idea, which seems logical.

I know what you mean about lock ups. About 3-4 nights ago, I had constant lock ups on my machine. I thought it was on it's way out, and was just waiting for it to exhibit the red lights. Seemed to go aay after that and hasn't locked up even once since then (locked up about 7 times during different games during that period).

Ended up costing me my place in the final of a tournament in Table Tennis.

well my mashed 360 has made me a tidy sum

it cost ?80 right, so i sold it as separate parts on ebay and got back ?170

i've already bought the replacement machine today for ?165 (still in warranty)

yeah that sounds about right - these gpus are all about shaders and other 3D jiggery-pokery. give them something 2D like SF or, shock horror, Uno, and they just don't know what to do

Well just had the E68 error happen twice in a row. Refitted the HD and it seems fine again at the moment.

If not ill be on my way back to Game for the fifth time

Saw a friend in the pub last night and he was telling me that his console has even strated to freeze on the 360 start up!

Maybe it has something to do with the OS?

It could be, but a lot of mine have happened in game and not on the actual dashboard. I think it might be HD.

i don't get it though - i thought the games are being rendered at hi res anyway, and are then just resized by that scaling chip to suit whatever display it's hooked up to?

                                perhaps not
