Unless I'm missing something, I can't see why using DVD purely as a storage medium for your signed homebrew package would be a problem, unless it's the actual drive itself that they haven't got round to(or are not bothering getting round to) hacking up/intercepting calls/etc, which could be the problem.

I suppose it depends on whether the PS3 currently lets you run officially signed stuff(e.g. DLC) off a DVD, similar to how the 360 uses those XEX files.

As for discretely saving your stuff, I'd imagine that will be a bit trickier, seeing as the PS3 can already access the entire hard drive's contents anyway without any trickery.

With the old Xbox, the built-in bios could only see the first 8GB of any hard drive installed(specifically, the C,E,X,Y and Z drives), regardless of its actual size. The bios that would come on your typical mod chip, like an X-ecuter, could see the whole drive, and so you'd have C,E,F,X,Y and Z drives. When the chip was off - to go on Xbox Live, say - the F drive was completely hidden.

I think the best solution is going to be via running all your hacked stuff (all apps + unofficial game installs) from a USB HDD that you can simply disconnect. Most peoples internal HDDs aren't that big anyway. We'll all be needing at least 1TB drives to future-proof.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I expect a PS3-style Crap Cleaner to wipe any traces, too

          Let the games begin:

Sony have spoken to UK magazine EDGE in connection to the recent targeted hack of the PlayStation 3′s security system. Responding to hacking group fail0verflow?s declaration that the PS3′s console was now ?completely compromised,? Sony have stated that they are aware of the claim and will respond accordingly. They said:

We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it.

We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details.

The company statement apparently counters wide-spread claims that there was now no way back for their HD console ? because the breach allows hackers to sign unauthorised software as genuine ? other than the electronics giant releasing new hardware.

As always, piracy invariably damages the gaming industry. Don?t do it. Seriously.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how they tackle this over the coming months and whether or not they ever factored in a Plan B in the event of it being hacked. Hopefully they can somehow keep piracy down to a minimum for newer titles with whatever new methods they're going to incorporate.

The statement doesn't really tell us anything. They're hardly going to say "Oh bugger, they've broken the PS3. There's nothing we can do now ".

The proof will be in the pudding.

Shame it's not Remy instead, then he could just parry it.

I bet Sony are kicking themselves, not putting in a gobal PS3 kill-switch ? So they can get PS3's sent to repair depots over time to whip out the offending piece of hardware/problem (and add a random number to their firmware!). Then pop it back to their owners...

I wouldn't be surprised if the first thing they do in the next firmware update is remove the update by storage media setting.

Yeah, i guess if this goes bad for Sony. The PS4 will require you to hand over a dna sample, be electronically tagged and only be allowed to play a game, when a Sony rep is in your area to over see it...

I fully believe that Sony can put together a patchwork system update which will fix things for now. But given the core security itself is compromised, hackers will find workaround, and we all know what will happen then.

It's not impossible to implement a new software solution that'll protect the console, especially if they decide all existing games are a lost cause. Sony don't need to make the console bulletproof, only make hacks difficult enough so that people won't bother.

My concern is that they'll do something crazy stupid for all future games. Like... If your PS3 has a firmware beyond the factory installed one, you've obviously net access somehow, so all future games require continuous online status ala Command and Conquer 4 - and then there goes my ability to play something like Deus Ex 3, because my net access is sporadic at best.

I can't shake off the feeling they're going to take a horrible scattergun approach to fixing this. You know, shoot the whole foot off to fix the verruca.

How long must they wait for me to produce a sample?
