The Sinking City 2 is my latest Kickstarter side eye project
It's beaten its goal in 24 hours and is being self published by Frogware. I get things are tough in their home of Ukraine but the wary nature of this Kickstarter is that the game is going to release in just a few months time. Frogware is a 25 year old studio which has been self-publishing for 14 of those years. The game is very clearly coming out regardless so it raises the obvious question of what exactly are backers kickstarting?
The target was 'only' £84,207 which doesn't go very far in game development or marketing and they've already passed a quarter of a million for a game its backing fans were going to see released anyway.
The slowly revealed goalpost targets for further backing promise things like more investigation elements, more enemy types etc which aren't massive things but this late on in the games development and with only a handful of months to go reek of monetising things that already exist within their pipeline. It's a bit late to be changing your game structure.
With 7 tiers of backing, the cheapest and lowest priced costs £38 and buys you the game - so basically... they're using Kickstarter as a pre-order store
