ah, i finally get it. there's a separate box - the actual console... have i missed it or did they just not show it?

Well, people wanted a Wii that can do HD, at the very least that is what we have got.
Let's see if developers can think of a better use for the pad than being used as a map in every game.

Say Wii U 5 times out loud.

Yeah, it's probably a delibereate marketing thing. They want every media outlet to show the controller, not the box under the TV, after all a box is just a box.

I didn't see the whole thing but did they mention the vital 'When?' and 'How much?'.

                Yep.

The only thing I can think of is because of the leak a few weeks back they're tried to keep people guessing. And as pointed out in the IRC channel they want people to concentrate more on the controller right now than system specs etc

That said it's made for one of the most surreal conferences I've ever seen. Dev's could mention "the new console" in the show reel but no one on stage would.

That HD Zelda they showed though - I'm so hot for that right now.

                  And sound like an ambulance.

If the new HD Wii is priced reasonably, I see no reason not to want one.

To be fair, the unveiling was fine. Coming off the back off the Wii many of us are jaded to Nintendo's systems but the fact is the Wii U does what a Wii does plus a little bit more and does it all in a much better way. The controller might not be ideal but it's less of a stark change than the Wiimote was and for those who aren't keen they can just connect one of the bazillion other peripherals the Wii supports. No doubt the system will end up with it's own model of classic controller at some point too. Maybe what was shown wasn't to our tastes but they're likely more conscious of the 85m Wii owners than simply showing off Battlefield or COD on yet another format

Brilliant. I really want to play games 6 months later on the Wii U than play on the PS3/360 versions.

Really dull E3 to be honest.

                            Haha made me laugh, that

Most likely, though I'm not expecting Blu-Ray support

Judging from the level of confusion all over the place, I'd disagree
