The Guardian seems to know more than most:

Steve Boxer: With its tablet-like controller, the Wii U is a seriously weird piece of kit. But, yet again, once you get your hands on it, a multitude of new gaming experiences tumble out of it. And the machine will have more hardcore appeal, too.

"So here they are: the console itself will run in full HD, via HDMI, but the touchscreen isn't HD. The console has internal Flash memory which can be augmented with "SD Card or USB solutions". It will play optical disks and downloadable content, and will be backwards-compatible with Wii software. And it will launch some time between 1 April and 31 December 2012."

That's all there is to know for now
So I guess the other two will start showing their next gen at E3 2012 to gazump this.

TBH I'm not seeing any point in buying a new console with the same power as the PS3. I guess the only upside would be playing Nintendo games. And right now I'm bored of the Nintendo cycle. But who knows, a good price, some good titles, you never know

Yup, I'm not expecting Sony to show the PS4 at next years E3 but I think Microsoft are a shoe-in and to be honest, after the vagueness of the Halo 4 announcement it wouldn't surprise me now to see a late November release of that system with it as a launch title to try and derail this. I'm interested in the Wiiu but as with the Wii only in the form of a supporting system. There's no way I'll turn down new Zelda, Mario Karts, Mario's etc but my next 'main' system will no doubt be an Xbox 3 or PS4 again

I agree, but it was probably meant to be like that. Confusion generates interest to know what's going on.

Kinda had the opposite effect with me. I don't really feel any drive for a console they don't want to talk about.

The Nintendo conference has captured my attention. I'm not saying I want to buy any of it, but after the mediocre Sony conference and the frankly disapointing Microsoft one, at least there is actually something new to talk about.

                  The touch screen isn't multi-touch

Footage we saw was PS3/360 (apart from the flying bird, that was made on alpha kit)
They working on Zelda for it

Just catching and trying to make sense of this reveal. I'm not sure about it. It sort of brings me back to GBA/GC connectivity or even glorified DC VMUs. But it could be that the timing and tech was wrong for those and this could turn out to be rather interesting. Like Matt, I wonder at this stage what would push me to buy another console of PS3 quality, although the answer there is that I'm likely not the target market. Joe Public is. But if we're confused, how does Joe Public (or Joe Pubic) stand a chance? Nintendo have already got somewhat of an identity issue with the 3DS. I would have thought this risks being an even bigger problem.

Reggie is such a rubbish liar.

No comment confirms that bird thing was made by Retro.

the touch screen isn't multi-touch and it's resistive. Nintendo have you not heard of capacitive (sp?) screens?

They've missed a trick there, but I suppose they have to keep the costs down. Plus it always leave room for an upgrade version later on.

The confusion for some I suppose is annoying but one look at the original Wii reveal comments shows it's no marker for success. Interesting to see the Zelda WiiU is headed back in design again unless that was like the GC footage that turned into Wind Waker
