I've got a PS2 game that outputs 1080i. It looks like garbage on my TV mind.

Saying 1080p doesn't tell us what sort of quality we can expect.

All that said, the Zelda footage seems to indicate that Nintendo's new machine will compete with ps3 and 360 quite happily.

Only if you want the whole interface to be crammed into a VGA resolution in every game. If you think about the HUD in most games it's much more detailed and sophisticated than would be possible with that number of pixels.

I think the Wii U looks great personally, I was wowed by the demo on stage of the shurikens being flicked onto the screen. The possibilities are tremendous with this, it actually works very similarly to something like Real Racing 2 on the iPad 2 now - if you connect it to your TV over the HDMI adapter, the actual game is shown on the TV while the iPad screen shows a full map of the track, time, speedometer, that kind of thing.

PS Vita will be able to pull off a very similar trick, but it'll be hamstrung by the fact that a combination of PS3 and PSV is not standard, whereas the tablet is bundled with every Wii U sold so developers can build in new features using it with confidence.

I was one of those who positively SCOFFED at the idea of a controller with a built in touchscreen, but I actually think the way Nintendo have taken focus away from the console itself and placed it on the 'tablet' controller is extremely clever.

Sorry to de-rail this, however does anybody know if the TV shown on the WiiU mockup images actually exists? I assume it does not...

Having spent some time looking at Microsoft Surface and Microsoft Vision 2019 videos today I have come to the conclusion that the Wii U will be fantastic. An almost 180 turnaround for me. Nintendo's conference really didn't show the potential of this thing. They did it a complete injustice.

I even checked out some Wii U footage from nintendo's site. They focus a bit on looking around the TV and extending what you can see on that pirate game. This alone will be great in some games. The conference was such a missed opportunity to really show off.

The best example I saw was a mockup on 4chan of Fatal Frame with the ghost showing on the conroller but not on the TV.

AMD confirmed that they are supplying a custom Radeon HD GPU, judging from the bird demo shown it should be at least a 67xx as abigsmurf already posted. This should give the console some more power over the PS3 and 360, but the rest of the system must be appropriately powerful.

It's basically a new take on what Nintendo was trying to do with the GC/GBA link up. It's an intriguing concept, no doubt, but whether it's enough to win Nintendo any more "hardcore cred" is another thing entirely.

I know i'm OT, but if you have Apple TV, iOS5 will support air play in Real Racing 2, picture & sound without HDMI!....albeit in 720p.

Apparently they don't have anyone actually working on the new Smash Bros games yet.

Don't expect any new information on Smash Bros. 3DS or Wii U soon - series director Masahiro Sakurai has admitted that …

At least when we announce something we know we've started work on the thing...

^ LOL - same thing with Pikmin3 three years back, which Miyamoto pulled out of the hat as a remedial publicity stunt the day after a dreary and heavily criticized E3 performance (not enough games, as usual) as evidence that games were incoming.

Someone needs to add some cart slots to the base, it's big enough to house them

It's at least a 5xxx series or later due to the fact it supports multiple displays. Custom 6770 seems a good prospect given they're producing a lot of them but... The graphics that chip should be able to put out should be much better than the kind of graphics Nintendo are hinting at.

I'll need to look at that bird demo in HD at somepoint but to be honest, I'm not sure the 360 or PS3 couldn't do that. It was very pretty but wasn't an amazing technical showcase. Maybe Digital Foundry could have a look at it and see if there are some major features on display.

It's entirely possible that the Console isn't even put together at the moment. There's a good chance the demo booths had workstations in them rather than the final consoles.

Isn't this Mii Chase game just Pacman Vs on the GC with the GBA link?

Specs must have been locked though, I strongly doubt that Nintendo will pull off something similar to the Sony/nVidia deal with the RSX.
In the meantime they should revise the outer chassis, it doesn't particularly good.
