Also, achievements interfere with the atmosphere on Shadow of the Colossus on the PS3. Which is why I still prefer the unsullied-by-badges PS2 version.

Resident Evil 6. Got 5g for going into the action figures menu. What?
Another one is when you get 100pts for clearing each level in a game that clearly has 10 levels.
Achievements should mean just that, achievements. I'd re-work them entirely and have them much more elitist than they currently are.
Some of the Burnout: Crash ones are good, where you have to hold a leading position on the leaderboards for a certain amount of time (If I'm not mistaken). It's like a medal for your service, and even if you become a terrible player they are there as a reminder of how good you used to be. WoW had some good ones as well which I could use to this day to get myself into most PvP guilds, if I was mental enough to start playing again.
99.9% of the time they are just plain lazy and bollocks. Points for entering menus.. WTF. People get paid a wage to implement that? How about they spend those resources on making their game not ****e instead?

They spent time implementing the menu, how many people enter it and have a look? If you can entice people to wander in and have a look then why not do it? I know a lot of achievements these days are linked to getting people to try out all areas of a game and I myself have wandered into a gallery menu because of an achievement and ended up having a look through.
I think companies are using achievements to help give them feedback about the game. A lot of people with the level 6 achievement? probably means there was something on level 5 that stopped a lot of people playing. Also, making them too elitist would just put people off. There is a massive variance between the skills of different players, why should only good players get the enjoyment of getting uber achievements.
I personally like achievements because I like to look at what people achieved; especially if I've tried to do it myself. Perfecting the last boss of Battle Fantasia and parry the flame attack for example. I tried for hours and hours and never got that, so to see people with that achievement in their list I know what they went through to get it and give them credit.
Dave - I still actually marvel at your ability to do F-Zero GX on very hard, considering I tried forever and couldn't do it. I only know this because you mentioned it on here. Why not have a little badge on your profile that tells me this?

The really annoying thing isnt not having achievements, but rather the reason why nintendo wont go there properly.
Because they are too stubborn for their own good.
I mean its something and nothing really, but it wouldnt be difficult to implement, and many gamers have voiced a desire for the feature...so the question for me is why the hell not?
There is reason to implement, but no reason not to...
Oh wait its a small innovation that someone else came up with.
