Even if you have the serial number you won't get the games back, because that's exactly what happened when my launch Wii was stolen in 2007. All I got was the remaining credit balance.

And this was dealing with Nintendo Japan directly.

Ah that old argument. Well if you think you're house is going to get nicked make sure you keep a record of your serial number :P If your stuff gets stollen you're buggered anyway, you wouldnt get any of your physical media replaced either.

Dont get me wrong, I agree it would be much better if Nintendo did have an account system and thankfully Nintendo have already confirmed its in the works. But on the other hand the whole situation has been blown out of proportion, with people saying that Nintendo are forcing you to re-buy games you have already bought when thats not completely true. But yeah the sooner Nintendo get a proper account based system up and running the better

Thats really unfortunate. A friend of mine was attacked and mugged and had his 3DS stolen with many of the games he had on there being digital versions, hes contacted Nintendo about it who have requested his 3DS serial number and a form from the police about the mugging and hopefully he will be able to get all of his games back once he has a new 3DS.

On a more positive note, F-Zero looks glorious on the gamepad I wasnt that sold on the idea but after playing that on the gamepad Im likely to upgrade my NES and SNES games once they become available on the eShop

For a start Nintendo are not forcing anyone to rebuy their games and secondly the VC games on the eShop work fine on the TV as well as on the gamepad. If you actually had a Wii U you would know this. Ive spent well over ?150 on Virtual Console releases and Im very happy with the service, I managed to transfer all of my games to my Wii U without any problems at all and they look great running through HDMI, a much bigger improvement to how they looked on my Wii. As for the upgrade cost, Ive got no problem at all with it and think the price they are asking for is quite reasonable, at the end of the day gamepad support wasnt included in the games when I first bought them and I can still play them fine without any problems now. Gamepad support is an optional upgrade that isnt that expensive but at least I have the option, if I dont want to pay for the upgrade I wont.

As for the account system, It would be nice to have one but for the Wii U I dont think its a huge issue, the console will be good for another 5 years or so and if it breaks Ill just send it to Nintendo to get it fixed, I wont lose any of my purchases. The only people it will be a problem for is those that regularly sell their consoles and then buy them back again. Comparing it to Apples Appstore is stupid as apple refreshes their hardware every year so its necessary to have that sort of account system to transfer purchases. Nintendo allows full transfers of any online games you have bought and theres full backwards compatibility, Microsofts next system is looking unlikely to offer that option and we will hopefully find out tonight what Sonys plans are but if its like the PS3 then I wouldnt expect 100% bc either.

Will be interesting to see if these same people bitching about Nintendos VC service will still be as vocal if it turns out all your XBLA and PSN purchases wont be usable on Durango or PS4? Theres still plenty of room for improvement as always with the VC but in terms of retro gaming (legally) its still way ahead of the others.
My, what's this, a voice of reason in a sea of hater and fanboy bias? I salute you.

To suggest there is even a single nintendo hater in this whole forum is quite ridiculous.

              Who doesnt love nintendo games?

These same people will probably have had multiple ps3/360 consoles during this generation, and never had a problem accessing content on any of them once purchased. Maybe things wont always be like this, but i would suggest that even if new hardware cannot run all the old software from stuff like XBLA, at the very least they tie it to a single account...its not rocket science.

I pride myself on being ridiculous.

Hehe, but Nintendo haters exist, believe me. I have several on my 360 friends list and one in my family - my brother. He can't get past the kiddy look and feel of their games. But I wasn't singling out haters, fanboyism is just as bad, just a different side of the same coin.

No I agree there should be an account system, but at present its not as bad as some people are making out. Ive personally have had 5 360 consoles this gen but thats because Ive had 3 red ring and I upgraded one of them to a 360 slim. Like I said the sooner Nintendo sort it out the better but for me its not been a problem at all

Nintendo doesn't need accounts for their systems because their consoles never break.

I've just never got into Nintendo games. Even the Mario games and I enjoy a good platformer. I do try with each generation but nothing seems to click. That Zelda game on the N64 was utterly chronic.

Neither Zelda on the N64 really held me. But I spent DAYS trying to get the best time I could on the Death Race mode on F-Zero X.
