Perhaps. Although I would ask you what current 3DS games are Japan-only that aren't coming to the west and are must-haves? Genuine question.

The problem is my tastes are a little odd to say the least you have all seen what i buy when it comes to games, it's the odd games that i like and those usually tend not to come out over here so that's why i never go domestic for Nintendo consoles as the 3rd party games are totally hit & miss about whats going to come out, hell even Nintendo loves to shaft the UK at random points, still waiting for those chibi robo DS games Nintendo..

Anyway the games that i would class as must haves would be,

Hero bank 1 & 2
Youkai watch 1 & ganso/honke/shinuchi
Taiko no tatsujin 1 & 2
Project Mirai 2
Slime mori mori dragon quest 3

other games while not must haves but ones i'm glad i own

Dangerous jiisan
Daigasso band bros P
Crayon shin chan arashi wo youbu
The Nekketsu! Honoo no Ramen-ya
Conveni dream

There are still more exclusives coming out im pretty interested in kenka banchou also assasin classroom has me intrigued.

I am also torn in regards to the new 3ds and xl models. Currently have an xl on order as i'm a lot more used to my original xl than I ever was with the original original. Given how the new one is larger slightly, do I go with a slightly larger, sharper screen or overall larger screen?

I wonder if the xl still suffers from floppy hinge too?

Sure, except story driven games and RPGs then become completely off limits unless you have an understanding of Japanese or are willing to sit there with a guide the entire time. Which also limits the range of games you can buy.

Cost is not that much of a factor for me here. We're looking at what, a ?40 - ?50 difference? On a machine I'll use for years and years and years.

It's not just the cost of the console though the games are way cheaper as well, nearly all 3DS releases can be bought from Amazon Japan for around ?25 or way lower there are some games that go for more, but on average ?25 is where you can pick up most stuff up, recently been going through the back library and some of those are crazily cheap like mario golf for ?10 it's ?27 at game, when your constantly paying more for your games it soon adds up.

yeah RPGs you'll probably stuggle on. Rhythm games is a genre that i love and yet how many have left Japan? I can only think of rhythm thief and i think one of the project mirai games is meant to be coming. Nintendo still hasn't released Band bros P and Taiko will never come out over here.

Not denying there are reasons to own a Japanese machine, but I just think it's a bit silly to lambast everyone on here for not owning one as their primary machine. Yes it's a bit cheaper, yes you can play more niche titles, but ultimately it will only ever be a second system for the majority of us. And that's actually adding cost, not reducing it!

Currently the uk doesn't have the N3DS but if you went into game and bought a 3DS XL will cost ?174, on amazon japan a N3DS XL is ?103 that's hardly just a tiny difference it's ?71 difference and that's for a superior model. Hell if i went into game with ?103 that's barely just enough to even get me a 2DS, you enjoy those UK prices.

Newest system update has gone live some nice new features added, nintendo also blocked the ninjahax exploit from working as well so if anyone was planning on using it you are now locked out of updating your 3DS.

I'd be very surprised if they were that much more than ?150 upon UK release.

Current JPN and AUS/NZ New 3DS/New 3DS XL model prices are in the ?130-?165 range (not accounting for import taxes).

Mine was ?150 Australia model New Nintendo 3DS from Play Asia. I did not get import taxed. Although if yr unlucky you may get stung but that's importing risk I suppose. I never forget my PS2 Japanese Gran Tusimo 4 import tax was like ?20 or so when the bloke arrived.

That's why importing and doing it yourself is way cheaper than waiting for Nintendo europe to rip you off. I went via Amazon Japan with Tenso to forward it to me, it cost about 16,424 yen for my N3DS plus 3000 yen for EMS postage to the UK and that included Tenso's fees. Also paid no import tax as i'm able to mark my stuff to what i want with Tenso.

Although that only works if you're after a Japanese console, although when it comes to 3DS i know i wouldn't want to be locked to a region with a poor selection of 3rd party games like the UK.

Wow those Tenso people sound amazing just book marked. No more worrying if Amazon Japan would send something to the U.K. Again Importaku fountain of knowledge brilliant stuff. Will inform the Wife too about this site.

I went for the standard size one myself. (Australia model) Currently on a UPS flight from Hong Kong. The oz model is PAL right? I suppose I can just transfer from my 3DSxl in the normal manner?

Yes PAL Aus model. Transfer is fine just make sure U.K region selected on both and logged into e-shop first in the XL else you will get an error.

I had original 3DS with possible wobbley hinge. The New 3DS hinge is a lot stiffer not sure about New 3DSXL but I'm sure it will be stiffer than the originals, as machine is designed differently to the originals.

Transfer went fine. I must say the 3d effect is much more stable on this, my third 3ds. I liked my XL but the games look quite pixelated at that size, so this seems the sweet spot. Build quality is good and it's nice to have the face plates. Are all circle pro games compatible with the nub?
