The Wii U really really needs a killer app, and one that actually uses the gamepad's features to demonstrate worth to potential buyers.

Parents aren't going to 'get' that though. I bet they see it all as a big rip off and don't understand why NSMBU won't work on their kiddies' original Wii.

At least the GameCube had wave race, luigis mansion, monkey ball on day one, all games I was playing years after release. The Wii had wii sports that anyone could get involved with and was packed in. The Wii u had what? I honestly can't tell you what it launched with, and barring wonderful 101 can't name another compelling title coming either. It's a shame, but ninty really only have themselves to blame due to an apathetic title schedule where even gamers like myself (and I'm not the only one) just can't be bothered.

MH3U. FFS. It's like Uncharted 3, but good.

Can't believe Nintendo are in this mess when they should have learned their lessons from the 3ds big shame really

Perhaps if it was 1896, but I think parents can read now and they iPhones and everything.

Sadly I believe you are overestimating the savviness of the general public. They only use their iPhones to play crappy free-to-bilk games about sweets and birdies and to 'Like' pictures of friends' ugly babies.

It makes me wonder how the world dealt with changing from NES to Super NES now. I mean parents were even less console savvy back then, so I'm surprised that Dixon's actually sold any units.

Joe you could have used someone like Rumbelows rather than Dixons, or did they go bust before the SNES released?

Things have been pretty quiet, but with Pikmin 3 out touch wood releases are going to be decent in the next few weeks and months, Cloudberry Kingdom and Harvest moon hit the Wii U eStore this Friday, there is 30% off Nano Assault Neo too.
Duck Tales and Wonderful 101 and a few others are due in August plus a few other bits so at least things won't be quite so barren.

Could do with more releases and sales I can't deny.

I could have, but I like saying "dick" a lot, and Dixon's more closely resembles dick than Rumbelows.

Rumbelows sounds like a dirty euphemism though. And it had a 'Game Zone' with a preposterous crystal like 'head' advertising it - can you smell the subtext

If you care to cast your mind back to the PAL SNES launch. There were only four games outside of the pack-in SMW available from launch for two whole months. You had to wait until August to buy Super Castlevania IV.

The Wii U was released here at the same time as everywhere else. The ONLY reason that the SNES had such a list of games released so rapidly was because everywhere else had already had it for almost two years, so the games were already made.

This is true enough. I remember, other than the pack-in SMW I bought WWF and then waited like 3 weeks or so for Lemmings - which my Dad promptly took over anyhow

In a way, and this might sound a bit counter-productive, but I prefer when companies don't bang out thirty triple-A titles onto the market per month, it leaves me with the problem I have encountered sometimes with this generation: that you can't finish a game before wanting to play the next! Haha so okay that is a personal problem, but I find myself a bit 'overwhelmed' with titles sometimes, where at least with the Wii-U there seems to be a fairly limited number of releases which, oddly perhaps, for me draws me a bit more to a potential Wii-U purchase . In reality that isn't necessarily a great business model and I don't expect anyone to agree or follow my train of thought, but I think the Wii-U has the most potential off any recent console, whether it will be fully utilised or not until the hackers get involved I have my doubts. Also I don't think I'm off in saying traditionally Nintendo hasn't served Europe overly well compared to the States and the Land of the Rising sun. But I'm a sucker for Nintendo and I can honestly say I'd rather have a console with 4-5 strong Nintendo titles than nothing. I guess one good thing (and correct me if I'm wrong) we haven't seen all the 'family' tat that was released on the Wii arise yet either - by this I mean the bargain bin releases that just knocked out any old cobblers in order to jump onto the wiimote band-wagon.

Fun and games... sales from April - June

                                Straight from Nintendo...

The worldwide sales of “Wii U” hardware and software were 0.16 million units and 1.03 million
units respectively mainly due to the release of few key first-party titles this quarter to strongly drive the hardware sales.
                                Breakdown is:

                                90k from Japan
                                60k from North America
                                10k from Other

Absolutely dreadful, though it seems they understand it's due to a lack of software. Shame they still can't be arsed to do anything about it! Pikmin 3 is simply not enough, Wonderful 101 will comfortably tank too. They need a AAA title like the other consoles have and perhaps they might be able to sell something...

Dreadul launch from Nintendo, hopefully they'll make some effort now...
