They may have unlocked the CPU and GPU to the maximum speeds but they wont be running at that speed by default, just as an CPU in your desktop machine will step down to a slower speed.

Long as they run at that speed when required then fine

Is that actually true? We've heard of console manufacturers doing such things for handhelds to improve battery life, but not consoles.

          It's a very unlikely rumour.

That's just some fanboy wishful thinking. The rumours I read also indicated that the GPU was upgraded to a whole other chip via this software update.
Why would Nintendo cripple the system at launch then all of a sudden massively rump up the speeds? I doubt you could even cool a 3+GHz multi core PPC CPU in a system that size.

Sony did the same with the PSP (originally 200-odd Mhz, brought to 333Mhz...was it just the system bus?) and Nintendo already did something similar with the DS (unlocking the second CPU for developers), a bump in frequencies can be believed. However, it's next to impossible to believe that they tripled the CPU frequency or even unlocked such speed for developers, way too many possible problems.

I just had a look at the list of games EA released for the Wii over its lifetime which beyond the mildly reasonable exception of FIFA (how many people will have chosen the Wii version?) confirms losing them is no great loss to Nintendo, they didn't contribute to the Wii's success so why they would to WiiU is beyond me. Like is said above, the loss of Star Wars is the biggest concern however it's likely to be years before a decent SW game is made on any system given how quickly the initial games are going to have to be turned around to meet the films opening and even then EA's current stance hasn't been confirmed as a 'We never will'. If Nintendo pull the perfectly possible job of picking sales up (ala 3DS) you know they'll be there with their shovelware offerings once again.

EA still support the Vita don't they? The Wii U's done better than that since it came out, the Vita hit 2.2m 5 months before the Wii U came out and it's now only 1m behind, albeit they've both lost momentum for now.

They still have support for Vita but support is minimal, I imagine they're quiet because they want Sony sweet when it comes to PS4. As EA don't really put much out on 3DS they probably don't feel the need to be as reserved with Nintendo. Thing is, they should be careful how they tread. It's a poor reflection on EA in how it comes across and they don't know what the future will bring, like when Square dropped Nintendo then later came back. Even if they don't want to release anything they shouldn't be biting Nintendo's hands just in case.

I don't think it is possible to increase the clock-rate that high via firmware/system update. The only thing I can see happending it that Nintendo have improved the documentation on their machine and how to use each component efficiently.
IIRC the PSP was underclocked, but the specs always stated it to have a clockrate of 333mhz.

Not really EA don't need Japan at all and lets face it Nintendo is set to only ever been a distance 3rd place next gen. Not that EA ever made much money from Nintendo this gen .

True, the PSP did almost as well as the PS3, so the PS4 might not do much better than the Vita, especially since Sony had to sell off several HQ's to turn a profit after a big loss the year before. No wonder they won't be making a loss on the PS4.

I don't care about EA not supporting the Wii U though, my contempt for them is so high it almost seems like a good thing. Now we just need them to stop supporting all the other formats!

And Shenmue 3 onwards! They're the only non-Nintendo games they should be funding.

You might not care, but if you want your consoles to be mainstream in the west you need the likes of EA on your console . Also the comparison with Square and EA is totally different.. EA can get away with not needing Japan , Square can't more so with Japan now just being a Handheld shop these days . EA do not have that worry in the West and they can make money off the likes of I-pad, Android , facebook for their mobile profits anyway

I would imagine too using established technology is the main reason the PS4 want be sold at a Massive loss like the PS3 with its Brand new BluRay drive and Cell chip.

Finally a release date for The Wonderful 101. The 60fps video of it is great.
