What did I do to fix it? Changed the power cable. It seems the original might be faulty or something.

    Nice one mate

Yeah sounds like fuse was the culprit, ok at low load, but any stress and pop.

Thanks guys, I hope it lasts. And that none of you go through the curseword-ejaculation-outburst I had last night. Let's play some games!

I went with a 750GB 7200RPM Momentus XT, about the same price as the 1TB one on amazon but it's got the faster 7200RPM spindle they don't make anymore. Got it sitting here ready for my PS4 .

I'd be curious to hear how well these larger capacity drives fit! I'd be temped to fit a 1TB SSHD at some point next yesr, but some of these larger capacity drives are slightly thicker than standard - not sure how much room there is!

The one I got is a standard 9.5mm one. It fits inside a slim HD enclosure I have. I think it's the 1.5TB onwards drives that are like 12.5mm etc.

According to Sony, only 9.5mm or smaller are usable..but it looks to me like there's room for bigger, maybe the space is for airflow?

I'd definitely have one eye on the air flow too, so I wouldn't install a thick drive even if it fits.

eBuyer are selling a 1TB Hybrid SSD for ?91, http://www.ebuyer.com/480284-seagate...hd-st1000lm014

That's a really good price, except it's still actually twice the price of a regular HDD. I'm looking forward to more in-depth testing from Digital Foundry to see if a Hybrid SSD really is worth the extra. A proper SSD is out of the question at the current price-per-gigabyte.

On an unrelated note, do any of the launch games use the touchpad at all? I almost forgot all about it, despite myself being really optimistic about it's potential.

My advice would be to get a plain old HDD for now and then get a SSD after the prices come down and also when some games actually warrant it.

Didn't certain PS3 games have problems being played from 7200rpm hard drives? Not sure if the people doing this were playing ISOs off the hard drive or if they were just talking about games that cache but still run from the BR.

I think heat won't be as big an issue as hard drives keep dropping their power/thermal requirements.

I wonder if, seeing as PS4 games are all installed to the hard drive, they won't have this problem.

Sony offering immediate replacements on faulty consoles, says it's still less than 1% failure rate
