The resolution isn't really the main case for me. Its this a more expensive console doesn't perform as good as a cheaper console. Yes you can be happy with expensive console if your getting it for exclusives. But if we are objectively looking at the two console side by side and seeing the differences, then we all know the winner. Of course that doesn't mean you can't have fun on the expensive console. It may be childish playground stuff but i feel a lot of the fanboy stuff just now is like payback for the last gen, Xbox fans talking about the George Forman griller and bragging about how multi-plat games are better on 360.

Should we no longer talk about colours, sprite sizes and scaling in retro threads, then? Street Fighter 2 on the MegaDrive looks identical to the Snes version to some, so it obviously also looks exactly the same to everybody else too and thus is a complete non-issue and should not be talked about.

yeah you could wait 18 months for a price drop and play stuff then but it matters not to me my ps4 cost me 430 as it came with Killzone a camera and a extra pad where as my xbox cost 400 and came with a game and kinect, its not a massive difference in price.Last edited by Lebowski; 19-02-2014, 09:03.

I'd still wager Titanfall 2 follows pretty rapidly and is on PS4 as well as Rising 3 getting an eventual port, not that they contribute to the discussion
However that is pretty much the nail on the head fact for XBO, if your friend list or likely exclusives are important to you then XBO is a perfectly good choice. If Sonys exclusives or having mostly the best version multiplatform titles or cost is important then PS4 wins it. Either way, the resolution difference is certainly less than we've had to deal with between rival platforms in past gens

But aside from the fact that most people here do have 1080p native TVs, and most TVs you can buy now are 1080p, I also know that my next TV (whenever that will be) will also be native 1080p.

of course resolution is important - most people on dedicated forums like this, want the best quality version of the game. If discussions regarding resolution, frame rate, console performance, screen tear etc were removed, it would be a pretty barren place. Why would any gamer what their game to look worse?
I have finally seen some ps4 games like BF4/KZ Shadowfall running and graphically i can see what the fuss is about. Even comparing versions of COD ghosts (from ps3 - ps4) there is a massive improvement in detail, clarity and image quality.

I'm surprised this thread is eight pages long already. I figured once resolutiongate got its own thread people would go quiet. Like when a brat kid wants the same toy as another kid but gets bored with it once s/he has it. The thrill of the chase and all that.
But in all seriousness, and for the benefit of anyone as confused as I was about the XB1's ESRAM situation, here's a representation of the sort of image size possible on each format. Bear in mind that updates to the XB1's GPU driver should hopefully allow the third-order framebuffer tesselation(or maybe one of the pseudo-tessalatory shader effects witnessed in DX11) and an increase in quantitative colourisation pipelines(or at least making the existing ones more efficient) I've been reading about which are already par for the course on PS4:
framebluffer comparison(PS4). This is rendered internally at 5592x1024. The vast horizontal size is for multi-screen output(i.e. 3 screens, each at 1864x1024, scaled to output res t). Notice the use of bezier curves first seen on the PS2. Also, it's running at 60fps with room to spare, apparently.
framebluffer comparison(Xbox One). This is rendered at the XB1's internal resolution and then scaled to whatever the console is set to output at, just like the 360. The right dev could probably get the XB1 to display this at 1080p/60fps.
