This sounds very stupid...I have no interest in the emulation service but I'd have rather went with whatever Nintendo console isn't available there yet.
Why would Nintendo consider the MD so vital for their online service?

Considering sega released a really awesome collection of md games on that md mini and some of them were totally new to been released that way, this new selection seems a little tired & played out as it's pretty much the same list that's been released millions of times over a ton of systems/clones do people really want md games that bad on the switch when the md mini exists. Then again i can't see the appeal at all of the N64 stuff been on there either, they are gonna look pretty ugly on switch.

Wish nintendo would make a basic online tier where they just provide online access to multiplayer & cloud saves & leave the rom stuff out i rarely if ever play the fami/super fami stuff because i have a much better outlet for those with my mini consoles.

Yeah same here... online basic subscription with online play and cloud saves, £15 a year... Want SNES/NES roms? add £5, N64/Genesis? add £5 or get all roms discounted to £8.

Getting the ACNH DLC is from the membership still limits you to being able to play it only while being a member, it's not like you can keep it after cancelling (PS+ model). That's exactly why I'm not upgrading.

The price being due to MD stuff is stupid.

I suspect in the future there'll be DLC which you can only get via the subscription method, and this is just proving the tech on a large scale.

I'd be happy if they dropped the MD games and made it cheaper. I love the MD but I can get those game literally everywhere else. I want the N64 stuff and that's it, I'm sure its the same for most people.

Everything has a sub these days, even to-do list apps on mobile try and charge a recurring fee instead of a one off payment. They can all **** off.

It's really lucrative. Honestly I can't get on a high horse for this thing. I subscribed to Spotify a year ago to get the multi-user playlist feature for our wedding, and I only got around to unsubbing last month. I was subscribed to Funimation when sometimes whole months would go by when I wouldn't watch anything on their service. When it's not much more than the price of a pint, I get lazy, I might want to watch something next week...

Years ago, I was a dedicated member of a gym. Used to go 3-4 times a week, for several years. One day I had to get a new card, as it started to fall apart, and the bloke at the desk said "wow, that's a well-used swipe card. You should be proud," to which I answered, "I must be one of your best members, I've been here for years."

To which he said, "don't shout too loud about it, but technically, the best members are the people who pay every month for years but never actually go to the gym. They pay, month in, month out, and don't use the facilities, don't wear down the machines. Why do you think we give employers cheaper rates to pay for memberships for their staff? The majority of those people who get the gym paid every month by their office? They came in twice in January 2012 and have just kept paying ever since."

Oh for sure, I see why they do it, and I'm not against everything having a sub. Spotify offers good value for money imo and you can still buy music on CD if you don't want to sub. It's just that every little thing has it now and it does my head in.

That gym story is giving me flashbacks lol, they made a killing off me for a few years there.

I know Nintendo fans are loyal to a fault, but really? The "expansion pack" is more expensive than the base service?

I think they just don't want to lower the price for NSO. It made more financial sense for them to set a price point and then add some ROMs to encourage people to join - people who couldn't justify paying just for multiplayer/cloud saving but say "cool, I get to play these NES/SNES games!".

This allegedly stems from Sega refusing to fully support the Virtual Console services on Wii U & 3DS because they considered the sales performance of Wii VC before them to be poor.

That article looks to be based off a single Twitter leaker, and in standard fashion the original tweet contains nothing falsifiable.

I don't buy it. Nintendo are surely aware N64 games are in higher demand than Genesis games, the majority of which are already available on the eShop. If they didn't think the pass would sell at its current price point, I sincerely doubt they would allow their arm to be twisted.

Maybe Sega got their hands on Miyamoto's browser history.

I'm not saying it is or isn't true. I did note the word "rumoured" in my post. It's clearly speculation.

FWIW, I do agree that being bent over by Sega for MD ROMs (when the Switch already has the MD Classics Collection available for it) despite knowing that Switch users have long wanted access to games from other Nintendo formats doesn't make any sense.

That said, it isn't a massive stretch to believe that licensing costs could add up, and I'm saying that as someone who isn't exactly pleased with the price of Switch Online being bumped up for the Expansion Pack.

Oh, my intention definitely wasn't to assume you were endorsing the article or criticise you for posting it - just baffled by Nintendo Life's uncritical journalism.

The basic membership (without MD, N64, and AC) isn't getting more expensive or going away,
