Assuming Zelda is still supposed to be out this year it pretty much locks down the Switch's Xmas line up as well ruling out any nicer surprises I guess

So what's the deal, do we think the new Scarlet/Violet games are back to the usual style rather than the open world catch 'em up of Arceus? I tried watching the trailer to glean where it sits, but if anything the first half made me think they were lining up a new live action movie more than a game, and I'm not sure how to interpret the actual game-y bits.

Definitely a surprising announcement. I'm not sure what to make of it right now to be honest. I haven't even picked up Arceus yet.
The timing of the announcement, so soon after Arceus's release, feels really odd. But from a development perspective, I assume Arceus and the mainline titles are developed by different teams - and by the time Scarlet and Violet will come out, it will have been three years since Sword and Shield, which feels like a reasonable timeframe for developing a follow-up.

It always felt daft a proper Pokemon wasn't on console and now that it is...
I guess it's all what comes from Nintendo dropping down to having just one platform. They've condensed the system into one but the Pokemon pipeline is now all funnelled in one direction and it's become a bit much. That being said, Game Freak are absolutely showboating Nintendo for delivery content. Nintendo is glacial by comparison

"Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series—battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them—now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy."

I'd love to play Majora's Mask again but only if the emulation is faithful.
I actually had another question about the expansion pack though, which is whether or not you can buy it through 3rd parties. The few places I've looked so far don't seem to have it listed, so I wonder if I'm on a wild goose chase.

No doubt in my mind that the wild areas in Pokémon SwSh were for Game Freak to try something new without upsetting shareholders. I thought Arceus was a brilliant departure for the standard formula and would love to see Scarlet and Violet in the same style but with the more traditional game structure of gyms and a league. Arceus seemed to borrow quite a few ideas from BotW besides having the instanced maps, perhaps that is the next hurdle to overcome to have a fully fledged open world Pokémon game. Definitely going to be a day one purchase for me.

I don't believe the Expansion Pack is available from third parties, but those on a tight budget might want to look on eBay where 12 months access to an existing Switch Online + Expansion Pack family account can be had for about £12. I'm unsure regarding the legality of those listings but they seem good value.
