Hardware down 11% surprises me, considering it wasnt long ago they said how well the Xbox is selling.

This sounds about right. Cost of living is biting right now and they haven't had any major content releasing in the period...

No word on the Activision buyout either which is potentially due why month now. I'm assuming whenever that gets the green light there'll be a flood of titles hitting game pass much like when Bethesda signed on.

"Nadella also mentioned a few other numbers. He reminded us that Xbox consoles have been the next-gen console market leader for three quarters in a row now (basically, they've been outselling PS5 for the last three quarters). And, hardware aside, Xbox's xCloud seems to be doing all right too — over four million people have streamed Fortnite to date on xCloud, Nadella said, including over one million people who were brand new to the xCloud ecosystem."

I realise hardware is down overall due to chip shortages, cost of living etc... but it's impressive that Xbox is outselling PS5 in the US for the last 3 quarters.

I didn't know that was the case...

It's definitely interesting. I'd like to see an analysis of the factors driving that. Series S's aggressive price must be a draw, but I wonder how much Microsoft's ability to get machines on shelves more consistently than Sony has affected it too.

I really have no clue. Jason Schreier should do an article on it!

I think it's a combination of factors. The Series S is easier to produce and obviously has that low-end price factor, plus it's clear Sony still had its own issues with shipments due to the chip shortages... All things combined I can see why the Xbox has sold so well, but I'm still very surprised it's been so consistently outselling... I'd have thought it would be more up and down like a yo-yo.

It's also clear looking at the cloud comments that hardware isn't even a necessary requirement any more. I know they've recently tied Fortnite into rewards to drive traffic but 4 million playing through xcloud just through a browser is crazy. The more they do in that space the less I think hardware sell through meters, at least in some markets.

MS remind me of the tv station owner in anchor man 2. “I took my father’s 1billion dollars and turned it into 10million”. Slow clap from the crowd.

Take SeriesS out that equation and they are still drastically lagging behind, with an ever increasing black hole thanks to gamepass.

Some games would be nice as well MS, no, oh ok.

Game Pass has got 25m subscribers. The rack rate is £11 a month. That’s £3.3bn a year.

A lot of those are on discounted rates though so let’s chop it down by 70%. Still over a billion a year. How much does it cost to make a triple A, probably £200m with marketing. So they can do four a year plus spend another £100m acquiring indies for the service and spend another £100m operating it (probably an overestimate but I have no clue what it costs to operate the servers really).

And it’s growing fast. Plus many of those users who currently maintain big discounts will be forced to pay more over time, the same as Netflix and Prime subscribers have.

I don’t get the whole ‘game pass is a money loser’ thing. It’s the smartest play MS have made since Xbox Live.

Oh no let's not have the gamepass discussion again!

Or the "but Series S doesn't count" nonsense...

Someone on Era in the middle of MS Support discussions has had MS's team confirm that 18 code redemptions for claimed gift cards is the maximum you can claim when redeeming against a single item.

As £25 is the max you can nab at a time that means the maximum value item you can get in a single order is an item valued at £450

Just enough for a Series X but worth keeping in mind if your total is mounting higher

I don't understand that as you can redeem cards away from actually purchasing anything? I don't think I've ever redeemed gift cards during an actual purchase transaction.

That said I don't think I've ever gotten close to 18 gift cards either.

It seems to be tied somehow to forcing cash transactions on higher value items but frankly if you were fortunate to have £800 in points you should be able to claim an £800 monitor etc if you want. There are limits on items as it is, such as only being allowed to claim 1 Series X so those mounting points shouldn't be constrained.

Still in beta, but crazy growth with 1800% increase in hourly usage.

I still find its a mixed bag on phones but it pays really well on console and through the edge browser (with the new graphical improvements) on PC ...

I have more faith in MS cracking streaming than Google. MS know what they are doing.
It's still not something I'd do.

Very much depends on the game - driving games have too much input lag for me given the micro-adjustments needed, but I played a lot of PowerWash Simulator via XCloud which was absolutely fine. It's not and never will be a console/PC replacement (but good for getting those Reward Points for launching the game).
