Yeah, incredibly poorly marketed, and frankly poorly devised. The idea that a 'HD Wii' would be a desirable product to consumers at large was a severe miscalculation from the get go.

Mario Kart is a proven seller for Nintendo - go look at the figures for past games.
It's time to move on from MK8 and MK8D. Suggesting that a MK9 wouldn't sell is laughable.

It would sell, no doubt. It would sell ****loads. But it would sell at the expense of Mario Kart 8, which would see all of its sales cannibalised by the new game. That's fine when you have a game that has seen its sales fallen low, but Mario Kart 8 has been a bestseller every week for for like eight years or something ridiculous.
It's definitely frustrating as an enthusiast though, so I totally get it. I played the **** out of Mario Kart 8 in 2014 and 2015. Like hundreds of hours of it probably. So by the time it was released on Switch I was kind of done with it. And honestly the Switch DLC packs were not great, plus the incredibly basic structure used for the multiplayer began to feel boring compared to more modern games.
I have exactly the same problem with Elder Scrolls and GTA, which I also played to utter death following their releases on 360! I would never have predicted these games would have such giant tails at retail and that as a result we wouldn't receive sequels till I was in my late 30s
The good news with Mario Kart is that the Switch 2 I think is finally the catalyst to give us a new proper sequel. Really hoping it's a launch game. It would motivate me to buy one at launch, personally.Last edited by wakka; 15-01-2025, 17:27.

People trying to advocate that we should be stuck with MK8/MK8D for life (not saying you are) is absolutely ****ing wild.

The fact that you yourself used "business case" a few posts ago as a reason for there not to be MK9, along with many others on this forum over the last few years (see fishbowlhead above talking about "Golden goose"), could easily lead one to see how it sure looks like people want MK8D around forever. It's weird.

We are right on the cusp of the new game anyway, if not this year then I would say certainly next year. Nintendo now finally have a very good reason to reason a follow-up, to help Switch 2 sell.

But why would they bother making MK9 if MK8 is still selling so well?
Not to mention, if it’s selling well then there are people buying it for the first time right now. They don’t need MK9 yet.
I wouldn’t even be surprised if the MK8 DLC sold extremely well to people dying for any new content.
To be clear, I’d love a new Mario Kart.
