This is cool. Working prototype of a new/better Nintendo eshop, synced with the actual eshop shop, rustled up quick by some dudes on NintendoLife. It's fast and it works. This is the filter screen, allowing you to filter out all the terrible dross that Nintendo allow on there: https://www.nintendolife.com/eshop/filters
Nintendo will probably nuke this off the internet but they should really give these guys a job.

Software is probably the area where the biggest risk lies. Whilst Nintendo put out quality games at a solid cadence these days we're at the point where Switch 2 isn't going to be able to benefit from its predecessor the way that Switch 1 did. The NS was able to plug a lot of holes using WiiU games thanks to how underplayed those titles were. With NS2 there's a genuine risk that we will see a revival of the old Nintendo drought days... or a lot of 3DS HD remakes

Conversely though, I think they stand to benefit from a lot of third party ports. We've seen how Steam Deck can run modern AAAs (yes framerate fans, not as good as the full fat machines), and I think the porting potential with this machine will be pretty massive. If I was Nintendo I'd have been heavily heavily courting third parties to bring graphically chunkier titles over.
Switch 2, for now, retains a unique position in the market as the handheld where you don't have to be kind of a nerd to buy it. And if it can offer a lot of the same full-price software as PS5 and Xbox that could be very helpful.Last edited by wakka; 16-01-2025, 14:36.

More of the same, which is no bad thing.
I can't say how important it is (At least for me) that it's backwards compatible with the OG Switch. Having that ability to delve into my previous collection, both physical and digital, is such a wonderful decision. Nintendo could have easily said no, but putting that info in that reveal trailer is a statement. Great stuff.
Seems promising from an ergonomics and backwards compatibility perspective. Now the exciting bit; Hardware power and what games are coming! Can't wait.

I'm assuming that sh1te nobody cares about like Labo and Ring Fit Adventure will be the games that are incompatible.
Surely Nintendo must know that they'll face a tidal wave of criticism if there are any more significant barriers to Switch BC on Switch 2...and god forbid they even dare to think about returning to the bad old days of region-locking...

I honestly don't think it would even to be Nintendo's advantage at all to hinder BC. Their addressable market is like 90% people who already have Switch 1. They need to make the upgrade path as smooth as possible for them.
They will still be able to do all the inevitable 'remasters' regardless anyway. It never stopped Sony, after all.
