By better battery, that'll likely mean 30 mins extra, tops.

I thought this was made clear from the beginning, that the Switch 2's screen is VRR compatible, but not through the dock (because reasons? Does VRR over HDMI 2.1 costs more in royalties?).

US preorders to restart on the 24th, with console prices remaining the same...for now. Nintendo Of America didn't rule out future adjustments. Accessories did receive a bump in price.

Retail pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 will begin on April 24, 2025. At launch, the price for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will remain as announced on April 2 at $449.99, and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle will remain as announced…

I saw it mentioned that’s it’s something to do with the display port-hdmi conversion the dock is doing, and vrr just doesn’t work properly, however the steam deck manages it so, Nintendo just not being bothered I guess.

Its going to affect the dock mode however long term, the consoles already massively underpowered compared to base PS5/SeriesX, VRR really helps with stuttering.

Handheld mode it is for me then.

Or, maybe it's because Switch 2 uses HDMI 2 and not HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2 supports 4K@60/1080@120 with HDR and 5.1 surround, enough for what Nintendo is advertising the system.
Steam Deck can probably handle VRR over HDMI because it's AMD's own Freesync Over HDMI, something they were pushing before VRR became a feature in HDMI 2.1.

I doubt royalties change between 2 and 2.1, but the hardware needed for 2.1 will surely cost more (and maybe require more power and more computational overhead), and they decided to go with the lower spec interface because it fits what the system is capable of.
It'd be interesting to know if VRR is something the general public knows about, and on how many TVs it has been correctly implemented, I supest Nintendo looked at present and near-future TVs and decided not to bother because it's not something the majority of people are aware of.
