I have a hard case for the Switch, a soft one with no handle for the Ally X which is a bit of a pain. The cases for Switch 2 aren't too badly priced and even though it doesn't have a hard case element to it I ordered a Tomtoc carry bag this time for NS2 as it felt more practical to carry with me on my back than other cases and is big enough to fit the other two in if I prefer them

Has there been any solid information on how the godawful primary/secondary console system works with Switch 2? In the absence of clear info, I'm guessing it's the same - so your new Switch 2 becomes your primary and now your old Switch gets treated as a secondary system. But a tiny little part of me hopes this system will be done away with completely.

From what I've read it sounds like the same system is in place so you would have the Switch 2 as primary and the Switch 1 as secondary, so the older system would need to be online to run games etc. As much as digital libraries are the default now, I still have a weak view of Nintendo in that regard so I'll be keeping my Switch OLED and playing all Switch 1 games via that. I've created a new Nintendo account for the Switch 2.

So if you sold your Switch 1 model to fund a Switch 2 and still kept your Switch 1 games, none of them will work on Switch 2 because your Switch 1 is no longer active? Or am I misunderstanding this (haven't properly read up on it) - please clarify.

Nintendo is using the System Transfer function for Switch 2 so to access them on that system you go through the transfer process and it then becomes your main Switch. I've never done the process before but looking up a vid on Youtube it looks like you still need to have the Switch in your possession to do the transfer. So, if that's still the case you couldn't sell the Switch till after you had the Switch 2 and if you keep the Switch after transfer you can play physical games fine but if you're out and about you need an online connection to launch digital games.

Why would I still need to keep a Switch 1 model just to access and play the digital games that I paid for if I've done the System Transfer to a Switch 2 properly??Last edited by Nu-Eclipse; 29-05-2025, 13:26.

Switch 1 to Switch 1 is done locally, you need both old and new systems. It's basically the same thing as transfering data between two 3DS, only with less fuss.
For Switch 1 to Switch 2, according to the guide you can either do it locally (both systems required), or online. With the latter you upload Switch 1 system data to Nintendo's server, Switch 1 is reset to factory defaults, and then download to the Switch 2 at a later date. The uploaded system data does expire, but the guide shows an April 2026 deadline as an example, so I guess it's kept for 12 months.

That makes sense, though if I ran my account fully on Switch 2 I wouldn't want anything changing at all on the Switch 1. Makes sense if your trading systems but my Switch 1 is still likely to see far more play than Switch 2 for a long time yet. So it having any secondary system restrictions or being reset is off the cards.
