Mario 64 - The first water level with the sunken ship. When you swim up the tunnel into the cave and thesnare kicks in on the music. Just brilliant. That is the cherry ontop of the cake.

Ikaruga Somebody already mentioned this when you finish the "trial" on level one and the music kicks in. Wicked.

        Zelda OOT Zora's domain.

Call me a Sega fanboy but they really know how to do spectacularly good level design.

China Town in Revenge of Shinobi. The music is a wonderful mix of oriental instruments and techno that suits the neon lit streets beautifully. Top it off with lashings of unliscenced Spiderman/Batman goodness and you have one tasty stage.

Hill Top Zone in Sonic 2. And people think deformable terrain started with Red Faction.. pff!

The last level of Wonderboy 3: Monster Lair. Cool graphics, very unexpected style in a WB game. The last is the Wonderboy from Monster World 2 riding atop a dragon which is an odd twist.

Lost World from Sonic Adventure. I didn't like SA all that much but this level alone was utterly stunning. The music is so atmospheric and it has the ideal balance of gameplay styles. Starts with an enjoyable sprint, moves on to a platforming water puzzle, then a platforming section where you manipulate light, followed by a gravity defying room where you can walk on walls and finally a last sprint to the finish. I wish they'd made the whole game to that standard, ditched all the adventure elements and just made an arcade platformer.

            Rez- level 5
            Goldeneye - Facility
            Halo - Silent cartographer
Psyvariar - Zero space. I am pretty crap at it, but it is my favourite level in the game.
Sonic (master system version)- Jungle level 2. The best sonic level. Ever.

              Goldeneye: Facility

The level design in this game is some of the best I?ve ever had the pleasure of playing. The Facility level is possibly the best combination of atmosphere, stealth, and all-out action. Due to the fact is plays home to the hardest cheat to unlock, and is mighty fine in multiplayer, I have grown to adore this level.
              Yes.

              .. Yes.

                  EXPERT 7. Obviously.

A personal favourite for me is Starfox Space Armarda. That boss scared the **** out of me, and the music was great too.

My favourite level has to be the temple of the forest in OoT. Everything in this dungeon contributes to arouse an unforgettable feeling of mystery, the music, the mist (in some of the rooms), the colors, the ideas, the general structure, the boss...I think it's the greatest dungeon ever created.

Also in Zelda, the 7th dungeon in Link's Awakening or the 4th one in MM are so brilliant. But you could give many other examples, as the dungeons in Zelda often innovate and impress.

                    Some non-Zelda fav levels :

                    - The tower of Mir, the green maze & the castle of Mercator in Landstalker, perhaps the only action/adventure game that ever came close to Zelda's genius in terms of depth and innovation.

                    - The year - 12,000 B.C in Chrono Trigger. Wandering around was a pleasure in itself. I loved this passage.

                    - In FF6, the forest, the train, the opera house and Jidoor's house.

                    - In Chrono Cross, the sea of Eden, the Vortex and the Chronopolis. So atmospheric, so memorable.

                    - In Ape Escape, one late level in which you drive and RC car to activate switches and move platforms. Too bad it was short and easy, though.

                    - Final Fantasy 7 - Shinra's building, the castle in Nibelheim...

                    - Super Mario 64 - the level in which you can enter a whole city below, it's so surprising the first time. The level in the lava is full of ideas, too. I also liked the one in the sky and the one with the clocks and gears towards the end of the game.

Silent Cartographer - I remember feeling that the game was giving me what I'd always wanted to play, a bit part in Aliens. Storming up the beach and looking round as the dropships took offas clouds of dust kicked up from the grenades. Absolute Bloody Genius..

It was good to read everyone's fave levels - brings back so many good memories, especially the Mario 64 ones, it truly is one of the best games ever.

                        Some of my faves:

                        Sonic Adventure : Sky Deck

Someone already mentioned this but I forgot just how good it is! It's different to the other stages as running fast isn't really an option. When you move from the first part to the second part of the level the music speeds up into a techno mix as you rush to the end. Great stuff by Sonic Team.

                        Ikaruga : Level 1

Yeah, this has been mentioned too! The level is so well made it blows me away. After you link some chains together and the level begins proper THAT music starts and builds up steadily through the whole level. Its timed to perfection and it feels great at the end as the camera pans out and you approach the boss.

Jet Set Radio : Benten Boogie

This level is absolutely awesome. The music is a dance mix that fits the level really well. It just looks soooooo good - a cel-shaded neon lit future version of Tokyo, ready to be tagged by the GGs. Its great to ride down the rail at the beginning seeing the whole level. The whole game is amazing though - I love the anti-establishment theme.

                        Crazy Taxi - Arcade City

Yeah this game is pretty old now and has appeared on almost every platform but it's still a great game, despite CT3 trying to ruin the series' reputation. The layout is good making for some real high scores after you've learnt your way around. Entertained me for weeks when it first came out.

                          Not really levels but....

OOT where you look at Gannons castle and lift those massive blocks, this part really had loads of atmosphere because it was so.....Evil.

Another Zelda one, OOT, when you walk up the stairs with the red carpet, it gets more exciting as you can hear the organ being played and you know you are getting closer by the sound rising on it.

Another would be the bridge in DMC1, the graphics looked amazing, it just looked like a massive place, reminded me of the FF games a bit

No-one mentioned it so I had to throw in Q3DM6. To me playing this online is absolute perfection. No other level works perfectly whether you're playing 1v1, Team Deathmatch or Clan Arena.

It's as if Christopher Wren teamed up with General Schwarzkopf and created the perfect battleground. The pillars, the jumppads, the satisfaction when I first made the jump from the bridge to the railgun.

                            Heaven.

Bionic Commando - The last level, when you had to escape before the building got blown up, there was a timer for that. You had to get past a few enemies too, it was so cool.

Broken Sword - Ireland! Damn I really enjoy the part when you go to Ireland, with little Mcguire outside and his funny accent. Also on the same section the Pub run by that old man.

Halo - The last level when you have to escape (I like escaping) in the warthog. This on Co-op, Legendary was so fun I didn't want to finish. There is even secret sections which you can get to if you drive hard enough or something and you can see some guys name written in blood in a pitch black room. And the talking grunt was also funny.

Final Fantasy VIII - The ESCAPE scene when the X-ATM092 spider machine thing is chasing you.

Metal Gear Solid 2 - The last fight with Solidus on European Extreme mode. That fight is so easy it's almost like your wasting the sword because it's pretty easy but on Euro Extreme, you get to use it the way it was ment to be used and the battle is real sweet.

Metal Gear Solid - Pyscho Mantis fight, when he reads your memory card. He said to me "Soooooooo, you like to play Suikoden!?" SHIIIIIIIT that was good. Also during that fight the "HIDEO" message comes up "to make players remember they are still playing a game" or something.

                              So many memories...

I always thought that 'HIDEO' appeared on screen because it was very similar to 'VIDEO' which is what usually appears on japanese TVs when they switch to an AV channel. Therefore the impression is that Psycho Mantis had changed the channel.

Metal Gear Solid - playing tricks with people's minds, long before Eternal Darkness thought it was cool.
