I'm sure that the potential damage to sales is a moot point. It'd be yarghed regardless of being available before its officially release. Those that were going to buy it will.

I think that the effects of piracy are always overstated when it comes to the effect on sales of really big games or really big bands. Fans of the genre/band will always buy the original even if they download the warez version in advance. And with a big brand like Doom, they tend to sell over a period of years as well as the initial rush when it is first released. Word of mouth, reviews, add-ons etc all help. And with Doom the Xbox version is sure to do well.
I'll admit it, I've started to download it from my news server. Impatient? Probably, but I've got some time to kill in the next few days with work, so that's my excuse! And when Amazon ships it, I'll reinstall it so I can get online.

This happens to every game, its just getting all the press because its such a big game.
