Apparently it looks fine on low-spec machines.

I don't think I can afford a graphics card this month, so it looks like I'll have to run it on the trusty GF3 in 640x480 for a month

I looked at the hardocp article and they tried it on one, said it was low-detail but still looked ace.

I got an Athlox XP2000+, 512Mb PC2100, 9600 standard with 256Mb. Same as my mate and his looked pretty shoddy @ 640x480 medium detail. Frame rate wise, anyway.

I'll play it at low detail to make it smoother, just wondering how bad it might look.

I decided not to bother playing it. Doom 3 seems to be all about graphics and atmosphere, playing it at 640 x 480 on low detail pretty much defeats the point in the game which is to me at least, a glorified tech-demo of high performance PCs and a way to shift considerable amounts of new hardware. My time spent with Doom 3 was ok, but I cant see anything that I havent seen many times before. I think Ill wait until Half Life 2 comes out to consider upgrading my PC to cope with software demands as Doom 3 just isnt enough to warrent it.

I know you get alot of these/

I've got a Pentium 4, 2.4Ghz. 512mb ram. How's it likely to run? I don't have a clue what graphics card though, where do I find that out?

                Device manager.

I have the same spec (although maybe more ram, depending on whether it wants to play ball...) and with a decent graphics card it should fly.

I have that spec PC 007 apart from slightly faster processor, and a Geforce 5600 256mb graphcs card, but for me at 800 x 600 low detail it is still very jerky. I am running it from a 2000 Server OS though which may be a factor.

                    RIGHT IN OEN!!!!

                    Ahem.

From a P4 1.5Ghz cpu upwards, with anything post-GF3, you can find a playable resolution with all lighting on. iD have created a very, very scalable engine here.

                            I'm very dissapointed with Doom 3 :/

After all this time it turns out to be a pretty Quake 2 in a Doom clothing.

The gameplay is too fast and furious to be scary, infact there hasn't been a spooky moment so far (this is no System Shock 2). The guns don't feel meaty and the fighting is uninspired at best. Far Cry looks and plays better, imo (and I didn't think that was much cop either)

Nothing worthy of note except the gfx - and little better than a polished turd. It doesn't run that well either (Barton at 2.6 gig, 1 gig of ram and a 9800 pro. The hardocp report was a massive load of bollox imo)

*grumbles to himself about the good old days*

If this is half as good as Quake 2 single player then I will be happy. I still go back to Quake 2 from time to time. I prefer it to anything that has come out since even Half-Life and Far Cry (although the best bits of HL/FC are better than the best bits of Q2 I enjoyed Q2 more overall).

                                Some Benchmarks

I Decided To Spend An Hour Or 2 Testing My Setting Up To Find Some Settings For DOOM 3 That Will Give Reasonable Performance. I Collected A Small Amount Of Data So Thought Id Share The Info

                                My Setup Is As Follows:

                                AMD Athlon 3200+ (400 FSB)
                                MSI K7N2-DELTA
1024MB ADATA PC3200 DDR 400 (IN DUAL CHANNEL)
                                RADEON 9800 PRO @ STOCK
160GB HITATCHI DESKSTAR (NTFS) 8MB CACHE

                                Using:

                                Windows XP Service Pack 1
                                Direct X 9.0c
                                Ctatlyst 4.8 (BETA)
                                Nforce Chipset Driver 3.13

                                I Got The Following:

LASTLY, i tried with my radeon 9800 pro clocked @ 414/366 And Got:

                                1024 x 768 @ HIGH With Shadows Disabled = 58.8FPS

I Reckon The Above Settings Will Give A Great Playing Experience Without Breaking The Bank Or Missing Out On Some Of The Finer Points In The Game...

I dont personally see the point of shadows, when:

A.Your Trying To Kill The Enemy Infront, Not Admire Shadows On The Ground
B.Whats The Point Of Having Em On, When 60% Of The Game Consists Of Dingy Dark Corridors.

You Not Gonna See Em Anyway...

Hope You Find The Info Useful Anyway

                                Cheers
