But theres a lot more to Jailbreaking than just the iPhone apps.

You may end up being able to purchase some of the apps but I'm pretty sure you wont see emulators etc. there.

Question - If I go into Apple Regent Street tomorrow to pick up an iPod Touch, what firmware will it have installed?

        1.1.3 should be on there.

Which aren't legal - I don't care for emulators, modded Xbox/EEE/GBA/DS/PSP/PC does all that.

Modding your Xbox or PSP to play emulators isn't any more legal than doing it on the iPhone if that's what you was implying.

If the majority of the apps I like using ended up on the iTunes store I would consider going the official route but for now there's no reason at all as it's handy as I always have my iPod with me at work so I can still play some Zelda or something without carrying around my DS or PSP.

I never said it was, I said they're not legal, but despite that I have many other consoles I can play emulators on and they also do a much better job of it too, as well as better controls.

I could have jailbroken my iPod touch, but I couldn't be arsed when the official route is hardly difficult.
I dont know as ive never owned a mac, i have only ever used windows and never paid for any upgrads or anything on that. So your saying its fair how new ipod users get these apps free yet the people who went out and supported apple by preordering or buying on release day should have to pay for them.

Seem to be having some problems converting some video files with Videora. All anime files downloaded off the ol' t'internet.

Throws up an error saying "unable to transfer to iTunes library" and when I try to open the converted file in Windows it comes up with "bad atoms" or some such.

Does this mean I have to redownload the original file again to get a conversion?

Have you tried just throwing the files into iTunes manually and seeing if they'll open up? I often get the 'unable to transfer' message but they usually still work. Never seen the 'bad atoms' thing though.

Yeah, I tried that. No joy. Messed around with the settings a bit and it seems to be working now.

Had a look on a couple of forums and it seems to be something to do with 32 / 64 bit sound encodes or somesuch. Something about Apple only using some of the H264 spec and still not having fixed the issue despite it being around since 2005 in Quicktime!

                    Or something.

I'm not sure if you can switch it I'm sure there's a way but if not set it to manage your music manually that way you can use as many PCs as you like.

There are utilites out there that'll let you copy the contents of your iPod onto your computer if need be.

First thing to try is create a new iTunes library and select manually manage music. If you are using the same login as your other half you can have you own library on iTunes by holding shift as iTunes starts.

Having an odd issue with my Touch and converting videos to it.

Got some anime .avi files which convert fine with subtitles and everything. If I convert .mkv files I lose the subtitles.

                            Any ideas?

                            Comment

Some .mkv videos have the subtitles muxed, but not encoded in the video. So they've in the .mkv file, but when converted they won't be added to the converted file, because the converter can't see them. To check, just open a video with VLC player. Goto (toolbar) view->stream & media info. You should see the subtitle as a separate file in there, a ssa file. I'd avoid these if possible, fansubbers (like shinsen-subs for example) encode the subs onto the video. Making converting a ease.

Anyway, if you want to get these subtitle files out of the .mkv file. So you can convert them. You need either VirtualDubMod or MKVExtractGUi (along with MKVExtract.exe)...

With VirtualDubod. You open the .mkv video. Goto (toolbar) streams->streams list, select the s_text/ass file on the list, then on the right select mux. To save the (usually srt) subtitle file somewhere. Now all you do is convert your video again, with what ever you where using. This time selecting the subtitle file too...

If you want to try MKXExtract (make sure you have MKVExtract.exe in the same folder). Run it select the .mkv file as input. Then, when loaded, select the subtitle file, fromthe content list. It's the s_text/ass one like above. click extract, it will then extract it to the folder where the video is, as an .ass file. Then use this file along with the original .mkv video to add subtitles when converting. If your video converter doesn't like .ass subs, use subtitle workshop or such to convert .ass to srt....

                              Hope this helps....
