I've just had the upgrade (after a bit of downtime last week) and it's rocking fine. A steady 118k on the downloads.

Is it my memory or have Pipex have altered their contention ratio. IIRC it used to be 20:1 now it's 50:1.

If it's BT that have to do the upgrade, how is paying Pipex ?15 going to help anything?

Don't know why I didn't look earlier. Sketchy details point out that it's just a standard part of BTs wholesale upgrade programme.

Is done on a line by line basis rather than exchange based? i don't see how BT would prioritise an exchange simply because someone connected to it's paid Pipex ?15, whereas a single line would be easy to move up the list. Maybe BT can prioritise certain lines within an exchange and do them first, then the rest of the exchange later?

        EDIT
Going to the BT Wholesale site and doing the line test I'm told
        Your exchange has ADSL broadband.

Our initial test on your line indicates that you should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides 2Mbps, 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to purchase.
So I might pay the ?15 - if that's accurate then I could get it quickly, just a matter of Pipex changing things at their end.

Just got the email today after i applied last week to have it upgraded:

          Dear xxx

Thank you for your application to regrade your PIPEX Xtreme ADSL service. We
are pleased to confirm that we have received your order and have requested that
          BT regrade your line.

Your telephone line will now be checked by BT to ensure that it is capable of
supporting the speed you have requested. This process can take up to 7 working
          days to complete.

Once line checks are complete we will email you to confirm the result. Normally
your service will be upgraded within 7 to 10 days after a positive confirmation.

As we receive updates from BT the latest status of your order can always be
viewed 24 hours a day on the PIPEX Order Status Web page at:

Please note that if your upgrade order has been manually processed by BT,
updates to this page may sometimes be delayed. This may mean in some cases that
we are unable to give you a date for the work to be carried out by BT until the
          day the upgrade takes place.

However, the Order Status page is always updated when we receive new information
from BT and contains exactly the same data as the PIPEX order handling systems.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
us on 0845 077 2455 or email us on [email protected]

          Kind regards

          Barny Shergold

Ditto Stu. It is almost as if they don't want my money. Just checked the change service page...

              Change Service

You currently have a change of service pending.

Until the pending service change has been completed, it is not possible to use the Change Service facility to make another change.

Ok, now I'm more confused than ever.

So will they upgrade your line automatically or do you have to request it...?

Because Pipex have to let you use the 1mb service over the 512k at the end of the day. So you'll be set priority.

ok ok ok. Can someone who knows confirm the following i have picked up after reading lines and lines of stuff about the pipex upgrade.

                        1. People on the 512k service will get a free upgrade to 1MB?
                        2. No one knows when this will happen?
                        3. Some people want to get this upgrade a bit quicker and are therefore paying the ?15 upgrade fee? even though they will get it anyway, at a later date?
                        4. Pipex have made a complete mess of the situation by not letting ppl know when the upgrade will be?

                          1) Yes
                          2) between March and August
                          3) Yes, because some people will have to wait till August
                          4) No, it clearly says "between March and August"

It does clearly say, but only if you look into it. An email about it from them would have been nice.

btbroadband users are probably being upgraded to 2meg from 512, because their 512 cost as much as 2meg, heh.

Anyway, got my email. 1meg ahoy, shortly.
