LCD/Plasma/CRT/DLP - questions

Just a word of warning. That company is listing their Toshiba's as 'Graded' stock. In otherwords there might be cosmetic marks on the TV, it might be a catalogue return or it might even be an ex-demo.

ah well spotted, although I've bought graded stock from Toshiba before and it was as new, I guess it is a bit of a gamble though.
full 12 month warranty and the seller is a Uk business seller so you could return the set perfectly legally under the distance traders act.

That's the seller I ordered mine from but made a deal with them to buy it outside eBay for ?600. I've dealt with them in the past and they're very reliable and trustworthy. It's graded stock but was assured the TV is indistinguishable from one you'd buy on the high street, both in terms of performance and aesthetics.

They do the 37" version for ?799, which I was very tempted to get, but decided it would look out of place in my tiny sitting room.

I don't have a PC at home anymore, so was looking for a cheapo one, or maybe even a laptop, but as I don't really do much with computers but mess about on the internet, draw stupid pictures in Paint and Photoshop stuff, I've decided that running linux off PS3 is a decent enough alternative (of course, there might be some games to play on it too )

Anyhow, after checking this:

I've realised my SDTV with just SCART inputs is not up to the job (wouldn't want to use an OS on such a low res anyway) so I'm after some advice as to what would be the cheapest way for me to be able to actually use linux.

Would it be a monitor with DVI inputs (but it has to be HDCP too - are these even readily available?) or a monitor with component inputs? Really looking for about a 19" screen, and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I've been looking around all morning and can't seem to find exactly the right screen.

Can't stretch for a proper HDTV at this time, my current one is for me fine for everything but what I want the PS3 for.

What would worry me is that they are customer returns.

I sent back a 37WLT68 for a replacement because there was a continuous loud buzzing sound coming from the rear of the TV. Before i sent it back i had a visit from an engineer and my "loud buzzing" was his "oh, thats just normal".

Its not a stretch to think Toshiba re-boxed it with a "Graded" badge.

32WLT68 - What should I be expecting in terms of PQ with Sky from this TV? I know Sky isnt the best but the PQ is terrible. Im not expecting DVD quality or anything but the picture is incredibly grainy and flickery. really noticable on blacks as it isnt a 'solid' black but just a flickering mess.

I decided to pay a few quid and get an IXOS scart cable to see if that improved matters but the PQ is even worse. Switching it to composite actually improves it.

That doesn't sound right at all. How does the internal DVB tuner look in comparison? (Sky should be pretty similar to it)

How's the "clouding" issue on these ones mate?

Some shops will allow you to return it if you get clouding in the corners.

I demoed the 46X and the 40W (1080p) last week and watching a 1080p bluray (on ps3) "open season" (cartoon), it looked absolutely amazing. Normal films looked bigger, but not really any better (although I imagine a DVD at that size would look a bit poo). My DC over VGA looked lovely too. GC over component looked ok if you sat back, but close up looked a bit blurry. GC and DC over scart looked like a bag of smashed crabs, so I imagine sky will look even worse, unless you have skyHD. So if you are mainly going to be using hdmi at 1080p, or Xbox over vga, it'll look great. Seriously nice colours and black levels were very impressive for an LCD.

cloudings hard to say cos obviously I always view them under very bright conditions, I can say that if you learn to set it up right the set can look very very impressive, even with lowdef stuff, I found the scalers in the tv far far better than in our upscaling players (admittedly fairly budged ones, sony NS76 and sony RDRGX1065) so feeding progressive 575p/480p is your best bet. The important thing is to learn how to set it up right though, which took me a while and honestly most other places I've seen it in stores it's been badly done.
