LCD/Plasma/CRT/DLP - questions

Well after returning my Samsung, I got my Panasonic LX52 all set up today.

Absolutely STUNNING - picture quality is quite literally incomparable to the Samsung on all sources.

I'm very impressed indeed!

I think so, you can switch to 480p on the Oppo and see a definate quality difference.

But the Oppo isn't all just about the rescaling. The use of DVI improves things too, but it isn't even all just about that... it's just excellent (for the price) at processing, deinterlacing and improving the image.

I'll be honest, if you just use your DVD Player to watch a film with the girlfriend once a week or so, then maybe the ?140 is better spent on stuff you need. But if you watch a lot of DVD's, it's money well spend.

It's not night and day. A DVD will always be a DVD no matter how much they filter and improve it... but it does make the best of the outdated source material.

What I'll probably do is just hold off until I get the TV, if I'm not happy with the quality from my current player (a ?40 Sainsburys job) at 480p on the LCD I'll buy the Oppo

Also, where can you get it for ?140? I can only find it for ?171.55 at IT Supplies

Yeh I'm considering getting one too but before I do, I'll be checking how it looks currently on my Xbox which is what I use to play DVDs in my room just now, then I'll check 360 which I imagine will be alot better then if I'm not that happy, I'll consider the Oppo.

I do love my films y'see, just got to the 100 mark on DVDs yesterday when I ordered some more on play.com!

Basically I cant afford a shiny new HD tv like the rest of ya, so I was wonding if I bought a LCD monitor like this one;

and used my 5.1 optical system, would I be able to play games in HD?

At the moment ive only got a budget of ?200 max due to my many other commitments and I only have a 20" CRT 4:3 to play on otherwise (asda job)

What are the disadvantages of playing HD this way?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If so, then yeh you can play HD on it, but there will be black borders top and bottom so the image will be kinda small.

Just look at any of the 720p shots and thats how big the game will be on your screen.

Can you not stretch the image the way you would on a computer input?

Damn that's a nice Samsung TV Simmy. ?2000 is way more then what I wanna spend though, you're damn lucky for getting it for ?1645. Who's your business IT supplier :P

As I said I think he mistakenly quoted for the last gen 40' Samsung, and I'm therefore doubt full I'll be able to get it for that price. It's basically a personal contact at a subsiduary of PCWB

I'm fluctuating from no new tv - a 32' sammy all the way to a 43' pioneer plasma atm. Really not sure whether to take a dip yet al not, although the Samsung would be hard to resist if I can get the above price ! Anyone got an answer on my n00b native post a page back

It would look like picture 1 as normal.

If you stretched it, it would look like picture 2.



I think thats the case anyway, all games are widescreen as standard so playing on a 1280 x 1024 resolution will leave borders always.

Either that, or I'm talking complete and utter tripe and someone can confirm otherwise, but I'm 95% certain I'm right!

I don't think so, And I think someone here has said previously, that you'll get borbers playing on a PC screen, unless of course you buy a widescreen one!

Dont take my word as gospel until someone else confirms what I'm saying though..

All games are 16:9 as standard and SOME games will be 4:3 too.

yeah that'd be about right, its not a bad thing, its not too bad to play it like that. I often play my pc games with a border all the way round them on my LCD screen.
