Could anyone recommend a good monitor to use with a 360 I was thinking of something like this but its not widescreen. Could that be a problem with the 360 as a friend told me that they don't work well on 4:3 http://http://accessories.euro.dell....dhs1&sku=53801

My mates mum and boyfriend are looking for a new tv to go with new soundsystem they just bought and looking to spend around the ?1800 mark for a 50". Any recommendations of what would be best for that? Will be used for Sky, (not HD) and DVDs only. No PC input needed or anything like that, so what do you reckon would be the best fit? Plasma, LCD? 46-50" preferrably.

Brace yourself for alot of suggestions!
For the money you suggest I think your best bet is going to be either a Panasonic 42PX600 Plasma, Toshiba 42 inch LT66 LCD or a Sony 40V2000 LCD.
Personally I would favour the Panasonic for viewing habits you suggest. However if they have alot of ambient light in the room an LCD may be better suited.

I hope they realise how awful SD TV looks on a large HDTV. I have a 42" and some channels are just unwatchable. They should really invest in Sky HD or Telewest HD. DVDs are better but only when properly upscaled and progressive - if left interlaced through a clunky old SCART socket it's like watching them through a venetian blind as the image comes apart so badly when it moves.
If they do want 50" though plasma is the only option. I don't know if LCDs go that big yet, but even if they do plasma is going to be a good deal cheaper. From what I've seen the big Pioneers look pretty good at that size.

Yeah, hes also just bought one of the beasty ?300-400 Denon upscaling DVD players so thats not so bad and I told him general Sky through RGB on a massive TV will suck so badly but they want a big TV and thats that. And in the room theres alot of light coming from windows and patio doors all the time so you say LCD would be better that way?
Is plasma generally better as displaying SD stuff than an LCD is, or is it just down to the set itself?

The BBC channels look passable on a 42" LCD HDTV... but only if you squint. Pretty much everything else is a mush of fuzz and compression blocks. It's hideous. BBC HD on the other hand, looks absolutely fabulous, especially in it's full resolution - 1080i.
On the other end of the scale...try watching one of the trash shopping channels... it's like real video on a 33k modem.
In short, tell them to bin Sky and get Telewest HD or Sky HD. No option really, it's the only way.

Hi guys, I'm not too up on the technical side of all this display stuff so be patient if I post something that sounds daft. I've recently got one of the Toshiba 42wlt66 screens after MUCH hand-wringing and forum reading etc. I checked it out in a few stores and was reasonably impressed but I do have a bit of an issue. The image quality is great for the most part but there is quite noticeable vertical banding that shows up on certain colours (light blues, greys mainly). I can reproduce it easily and it's not something I've noticed on other LCD tvs. Is it likely to be "curable" by calibration or is it more likely to be a faulty set? I know people were talking about banding problems on this set's thread at AVForums but I think that was a different issue.
I'm hoping this is something that can be remedied without swapping out sets etc.
Thanks in advance for any tips/advice/solutions!

Yet if you watch some ITV1 or Channel Five shows, they can look really good.
