I couldn't agree more , the eerie soundtrack really does send a Chile down the spin ,and created an almost unmatched atmosphere, amazing for a 16 bit game.
SM is still one the greatest game ever created , its just amazing to play it , never ages or gets boring . Its games like that that made me love the Snes more than the MD . In the 16 bit days , NCL were in a league of their own

Star Fox doesn't look great. It's strange, because it should look crap now, but.. it doesn't. I was playing it on a huge screen - and was perfectly happy with what I was seeing. It's so simplistic, but also well designed. I like the colours used and the style of the environments and enemies etc.. The music is excellent - plus the sound effects add immensely to the ambience.

I really did expect the game to look like a joke now. The fact that it's still a very nice game to play - just proves how deserving of praise it was back in the day. Another Nintendo classic. I will be playing the N64 sometime soon. I wish NCL would make a new Star Fox for the Wii. It's sad that the company are neglecting some of their big franchises. Maybe I will get lucky - and they will announce a new Pilotwings, F-Zero, Star Fox.

And if a MD fan said that , you'll hit back with the this 64 colour load of tosh . Its clear , when a game is made well , and has a great engine and art to back it up , then noone thinks or cares much about colours . Sonic still looks as good now , as it when it 1st game out .

There's plenty of Snes and MD games that have aged badly , and plenty that haven't . In my eye's gaming perfection that is Revenge Of Shinobi and Mario IV , Metroid, Castlevania IV will never age .

Back on topic , I still love playing Super R-Type on my Snes, the game is brilliant and I don't get the hate . Also its in my view one of the best sounding games on the Snes, the sound effect are brilliant and the pumping soundtrack one of the best ever

I'd throw Streets of Rage 2 into that list too. I played it with a 'casual' gaming mate a while back who didn't really get into gaming until the advent of the Playstation. He commented that it was a great game which still looks good today.

I was an MD fan - before I got a SNES

As you say, some games have aged badly, some have aged well. The Sonic games still look and sound perfectly nice. Definitely timeless. It all comes down to style.

Super R-Type is good. I agree that the music and sound effects are excellent. I prefer it over R-TypeIII. III just has something dull about it; it has never gelled with me. Axelay, Area88, Macross, are three SNES shooters, that I prefer over the R-Type games. Axelay doesn't get enough respect from some people - because it's not rare and has been talked about to death, but.. I see it as the best snes shooter. Parodius was a big fave of mine, too. It was also on the PCE, but.. I didn't play that version, so the SNES introduced me to the brilliance of the Parodius series.

In fact, I think I'll play Parodius soon. Then it's sequel - which is just as great.

The SNES has two Parodius games. I also like 'Sexy' on the Saturn. All three are great. I've also completed the original many many times. Such an enjoyable game.

He's right there's three snes versions.
Parodius Da, Gokujou Parodius and Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius.

Decided to play that game today, since i haven't played it for a while.
Gotta love the ridiculous damage you can do with Ryoga.

                    X > Y+B > Fireball, about half bar damage

Tried playing the ranma janken puzzle game afterwards and just got confused as to how it works.

just got into my SNES for the first time, DKC and Metroid have been brilliant, awesomely playable.

I should get Castlevania IV, its not Metroid style that one is it?

Not much to add to this topic other than as a SNES nut since '91 it will always be the best machine (ie best software) without a doubt. There's a fair chunk of nostalgia involved but the hype, anticipation and excitement that surrounded SF and Starfox etc will never be forgotten. Still remember clearly seeing Starfox on that ITV games show with Violet whatshername...

If new to SNES may I humbly suggest a top 25 or so of MUST play games (or, well, my favourites anyway, bold are the top, top few ):

                        Contra
                        Final Fight
                        Goemon I, II, IV
Super Street Fighter II or Turbo
                        Super Pang
                        Super Tennis
                        Desert strike
                        F - Zero
                        Lethal enforcers
                        Pilotwings
                        SOS
                        Secret of mana
                        Simcity
                        Smash TV
                        Starfox
                        Sunset riders
                        Super Mario all stars
                        Super Mario kart
                        Super Mario world
                        Super Metroid
                        Super punch out
                        The legend of Zelda
                        Yoshi?s island
                        UN squadron

Thanks for letting me know. I only have Parodius Da & Gokujou. By '95, I wasn't so in to the snes, so I didn't pay much attention to what games were coming out for it. At least I've discovered a new game for the system.

A nice list. I'd add CastlevaniaIV & Axelay to it. It's good to see Super Pang & Sunset Riders in there. ... SmashTV is also excellent( the snes joypad suits the game )

I was checking out 'My Music' last night and realised I'd downloaded the Castlevania IV soundtrack at some point, must've been drunk when I did because I'd forgotten all about it. It's 'proper music', isn't it, absolutely beautiful. I was just wowed all over again, I forgot how good the SNES sound chip was, just how brilliant the tunes in that game actually are.

Anyway, my top 12 SNES games:

                            Super Punch Out
                            Super Metroid
Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
                            Final Fight
                            Castlevania IV
                            Super Ghouls N' Ghosts
                            Super StreetFighter 2
                            Contra/Super Probotector
                            Super Mario Kart
                            Equinox
                            Metal Marines
Super Mario World (never played Yoshi's Island )

The only others I can think of are Gamesmaster or Cybernet..

Damn I'm gonna have a search for some clips of those shows now!
