I also like the neon look of it, the mad, 'fairground' use of colour. Apparently, the Japanese SFC game is more 'complete' than the Western versions.

If you want a bad Technos beat 'em up, check out Combatribes. Some beautifully-designed sprites and great-looking backdrops, but strangely naff, beige gameplay. I'd like someone to tell me I was missing out on something but I'm pretty sure I wasn't. Still, my memory seems cued in to the visual appeal of it and I kind of want to revisit it, just to consolidate my opposing thought processes vis a vis this game.
I've always disliked Double Dragon on the SNES. I played it a few weeks back, and it reaffirmed my negativity towards it. The pace of the game is sluggish - and the levels drag on too much. The music is nauseating - and the overall atmosphere is tiresome. Only the neon lights are appealing, but were done better in Streets Of Rage.

I maybe hated Combat Tribes even more. A game that I played - and have tried to forget ever since. Dire in every way.

Played some Final Fight 3, Super Mario Kart and Populous last night. I always forget how much fun Populous is. Was making my wee followers propser till almost 2am!

I skimmed the thread and didn't see an answer to this.

Yes, get Castlevania IV, it is a traditional Castlevania and is excellent (best SNES game maybe?).

I quite like combatribes, mostly due to playing the arcade version when i was younger.
The snes version removed quite alot of things, weapons, and extra sections of stages.
It's not the most well designed game but i like it anyway

Speaking of technos have u guys tried this PopEye game they made?

Was a Japan only release, and seems pretty hard to find. (Have only played it via emulation )
It's pretty decent though, like a platformer with some board game elements.

Three excellent games. I was thinking about Populous the other day. It's such a great game. I used to play the Amiga version in 2-player against my Brother( using serial link ) .. The best God game I've ever played. I recall the SNES version being a good conversion. Good to hear you are enjoying it.

Yeah, none of that boring Metroidvania business. The whole game is a joy in every way. Definitely in my Top5 SNES games. It's a shame Konami never made CastlevaniaV for the machine. I'd have loved a true follow-up.

I don't mind Combatribes. It's not great but I always remember seeing it in Snes magazines and I never managed to get a copy till last year!

It's an entertaining wee game in it's own right, but not near the goodness of Final Fight, Turtles et al.

As for Castlevania, easily in my personal Snes top 10 (maybe even top 5). The funny thing is I remember borrowing it from a school chum when it first came out, and I disliked it for a day, then gradually warmed to it. Nowadays I see it as a timeless classic.

I have a vague memory of not being overly impressed with CastlevaniaIV the first time I played it( only for a few minutes. ) ... The start of the game, isn't exactly breathtaking. The visuals are murky and nothing to get excited about, but.. as you play through the first few levels, you realise how well made it is.

In fact, the visuals are much better than first impressions fail to appreciate. I really like the orange, purple, brown, grey, green palette. It looks perfectly appropriate for the games settting. I much prefer the way the game looks and moves - compared to Symphony of the Night. There is something too slick & sharp about SOTN, and the animation in a lot of areas isn't so effective. Plus.. it's Metroidvania

I think I saw that back in the day, but.. didn't play it. Definitely looks promising. I think the visuals and game style, look really good.

Looks good!! Must add it to my wanted JAP games list.

After the talk about the Mickey Mouse games a few pages back I have gone and completed all of the SNES and also the Megadrive ones. (apart from Mickey Mania)

Castle of illusion is certainly very good (if a bit slow and jerky in parts) but is far better than World of illusion or Fantasia.

The 3 Capcom SNES Mickey games (Magical Quest + the 2 sequals) are better looking than any of the Megadrive games and also pass the test of time better. I think the Magical Quest is the best of the lot.

Then there is this SFC one that not alot of people know about - MICKEY NO TOKYO DISNEYLAND (Jap only)

This is really worth getting hold of as the gameplay is very inavitive, For instance Mickey has a cylinder on his back which is used to fill balloons with either water (to throw at enemies etc) or Air - Helium I presume - to let you float around and do other cool stuff.

I have also been playing another cool (JAP only) Disney SFC game that is also little known and was in the top 100 SNES games in Retro Gamer Magazine! - Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi.

This is also a very inavitive game, mixing different gameplay styles with classic platfoming! At the start you have to do jobs - One has you delivering Letters or Newspapers while riding a bike like paperboy! - Then there is one where you have to jump around and clean all the windows on a building while avoiding enemies.
After these levels it seems to go into a classic platform game like the Mickey Mouse games! It's class

                  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a different topic - I have decided to go for a complete PAL SNES collection!!!

I want all games Boxed complete with instructions and in at least 7/10 condition, I currently have about 270 which I beleive is about half way???

I am going by this list - http://www.supernes.de/upload/file/p...n/snes-pal.pdf

Can anyone tell me if they think any PAL game is missing?

I will probably put a list of games I am after in the wanted thread so if any of you can help let me get some of the games I need please let me know

I just got my SNES top cover back from chaoticjelly today with a nice, tidy, widened cart slot so I simply had to rinse Chrono Trigger.

This may come as a shock to some of you but until now I had never played Chrono Trigger to any great depth, having just dicked about for a bit on an emulator. I must say that it's a beautiful game -- the music, the lush graphics, the concept of time travel all combine to make a very impressive RPG. And the thing I love most? NO RANDOM BATTLES!! My only regret is that I have a pile of uni assigments to do over Easter, otherwise I'd probably spend all day long playing the game.

Magical Quest was a fave of mine, I definitely will play it again soon. That Donald Duck game sounds interesing. There are quite a few Japan only games that are really good. It's a shame that the SNES version of ExciteBike didn't get a cartridge release.

Castle Of Illusion was fantastic but the rest of the Disney MD games were pretty much well-wack. Quackshot had beautiful graphics and enigmatic sound (for an MD game) but played like a disabled on a quartz deathbed.

The SNES Aladdin was brilliantly playable, 100% vintage Capcom-feeling, beautiful graphics and feel, but it was far too easy. Even so, it thrashed the arse off the supposedly 'better' MD version, with its swishy, pant-flying graphics and floaty, Cool Spot gameplay. Horrible game (with admittedly swish animation).

And I'm almost speaking as a Megadrive fanboy...

Yep, a magical game. I like my games to be pretty easy .. So, that always makes me like a game more. It's always a shame when a nice looking game - is a nasty bastard to play.

You must have been playing a different version to me. Quackshot is an amazing game. Easily in my top 10 megadrive games ever. I found it much more entertaining and playable than the megadrive castle of illusion.

I haven't played Quackshot for a long time, but.. I remember loving it back in the day. Another game that I'll have to return to.

What about Pocky & Rocky 1 & 2( Kiki Kaikai ) I really enjoyed both of them for the SNES. Nice visuals, lots of action, and good music. Only problem for me, is the high difficulty level.
