Paulo got bitten multiple times by the spiders crawling on him, meaning he'd be out for longer or that the amount of toxin might have actually killed him.

Wow. I'm sure the writers don't put half as much thought into it as you guys do!
I can't see this episode as anything other than a bit of fun, a whimsy, like a wee macabre fan-fiction short story ... enjoyable, but ultimately inconsequential. There are a couple of moments that relate to the main plotline, but if there wasn't, I expect the peasants would revolt a lot worse than they already have done.
It's like in Twin Peaks ... the second season of that was drawn out with soap-opera style plotlines to interest the viewers who only watched it cos they liked the characters and the scenery and the catchphrases rather than the darker "good vs evil" Black/White-Lodge stuff.

The latest episode has been out for nearly 2 days and this thread hasn't seen a bump. What the hell?
Anyway, we are back on track with the 'main' storyline and there's a rather interesting twist in the story.
Not to mention a starring role for our favourite Mr Smokey. I was pretty surprised that
it seems the others have no idea WTF it is either.
Superb episode that has a good mix of flashbacks
(including more mixing between old characters)
, the main story and beach life for some light comic relief. Pretty much a perfect episode when put like that.
We don't yet know what went down with Locke's father but the aftermath is there.
More of this, please!

Aye I concur - althoughJuliette pretended she didn't know f-all about the smoke which wasn't true either ? Although obviously if the "fence" is there to keep it out they wouldn't be able to control it in that matter
Did you notice it appeared as soon as Kate dislocated Juliettes shoulder - coincidence ?
And
What was that with it seemingly taking photographs ? Is that how it "captures" their history as with Ecko ????

She was obviously fishing to see if Kate knew more
I cant remember here being flashes wth Ecko, was there?
One thing I did notice is
When the smoke hits the barrier it comes from three different directions before joining into one mass. Ties in with it being a guardian of some sort - Cerebus three headed dog that guarded the entrance to Hades in Greek mythology. We've seen Cerebus system mentioned before on the blastdoor map.
Also
How did the quiet, passive scientist Juliet become the hard as **** Juliet who managed to dodge Kates attack and take her down in a split second? Same with the other 'others' we've met.
