Watched The Skin I Live In last night. Missed it at the pics last year so picked it up on blu-ray. All I can say is I'm glad I avoided any reviews & plot details. Go in cold and let it unfold in all its beauty. Brilliant film.

I finally watched The Expendables and felt a little underwhelmed, to be honest.
I thought there'd be more action! Shakycam was there, but not as bad as Bourne 2&3/Bond QoS.
If I was about 12, I probably would have thought it was immense, like Commando or something.
Sylvester Stallone is a little obsessed with guns that make people burst, judging by this and Rambo 4. Oh and looking really veiny...

Also none of these appalling techniques ruined any part of the movie for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
If a film sets itself out not to be taken seriously from the very start, then maybe that should extend to the "techniques" applied too....in the case of planet terror that much is a given.
I mean if the acting, dialogue, plot, direction, editing etc are all really intentionally bad....and thats all fine and dandy, then surely taking the rest of the proccess seriously would take away from the desired effect of the movie.
Its suppost to be bad, that bad you laugh at it.
As for the end result thats a matter of opinion/taste.

I love cheesey B movie films. I love films that knowingly mock their genre IF they do it correctly. We aren't talking just trashy stories here with trashy gore effects. We're talking absolutely gob smackingly **** film technique. That's the difference. Compare to proper trashy genre films like say Braindead, made with skill.
He delivers entertaining movies becuase of the ideas behind them and the fun he has with them, I personally like most of his films a lot, but none of them are great film making for me.
Also I love Braindead but its not made with any more skill than Planet Terror, in fact if you take away the zany new zealand humour then you're left with a film that Robert Rodireguez easily could have made.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, as I said, I love Braindead.Last edited by rmoxon; 06-01-2012, 11:41.

It had some good stuff, mainly all involving Jason Stathem beating people to a pulp.... But then we can see it in other more entertaining films anyway.Last edited by rmoxon; 06-01-2012, 11:48.

If they cast a skinny fella with a cheesy 70's pornstar tash, along with chainmail...and then gave him the line "i dont need the knife john"
Well, expendables could have worked

Commando wasnt just great due to the fact that it had a weird camp bad guy though.
It was great becuase it was the Pinacle of the American action genre!!!!!!!Last edited by rmoxon; 07-01-2012, 11:10.

Catching up on some 2011 releases.
Whats your number - Passable chick flick. Doesn't start out well but it has some actual funny bits and ends okay.
Meek's Cutoff - Slow paced Western (no big badda boom) that tells a more realistic tale of the reality at the time. Okay film.
Rubber - Okay. Amusing parts throughout but it's tries to be something bigger than a B-movie and flops.
Margin Call - Well made but lacked any purpose.
127 Hours - Good film. Bit too much fannying around and I would have preferred It to be real time.

Real steel: Wasn't expecting much from this, but quite enjoyed it. Little kid was annoying but so was Hugh Jackman - Shouting overload. Was nice to see Evangeline Lilly in something post lost, but it was very much a subdued role. Oddly I found the fight scenes between the robots very satisfying, and even found myself cheering for the underdog. It is all a bit ridiculous, but it's worth a watch.
Trust: Clive Owen stars in this one, which deals with online grooming and the fall out from it - Its a good film, but isn't easy watching. Great performances from all the cast, in particular the young girl (Liana Liberato) - You watch the film knowing were it is going, but even so, its so well done, that it still shocks. The ending is quite sobering
Watched scream 4 and the latest pirates also, but neither did a lot for meLast edited by Shez; 08-01-2012, 21:31.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo remake - decent remake in terms of style, if a bit pointless (a lot like Let Me In). Didn't like that in this version
they've really strongly portayed Blomkvist and Salander as being in a relationship, whereas in the Swedish version I'm pretty sure they **** once and that's it. In the yank version she completely loses her character and gets all lovey dovey. Also, Blomkvist telling Salander to kill whathisface, and what happens when she gets to him are as different from the original as possible.
And the end is WAY too long.
The Artist - really good. Bit maudlin, but entertaining. Only a film ABOUT silent movies could be a silent movie nowadays.

Watched a few this week...
Zombieland...Had this on Blu-Ray since last Christmas & only just watched it, loved it.
Didn't take itself seriously, was nice & funny & had some good set pieces
Woody Harrelson was great & Bill Murray was a nice surprise, Emma Stone is hot as well.
All in all worth a watch
TF: Dark of the Moon...Got this for Christmas & it's just as awful as the first time I saw it.
I had hoped that re-watching it at home would make it easier to view as I could get up & leave during all the ****, but all it did was re-affirm just how freaking wrong Bay got EVERYTHING.
It's still better than Revenge of the Fallen but that wasn't hard.
Tuttoro winds me up, Shia winds me up, Rosey whats her face winds me up...the only thing that didn't was Tyresse Gibson as he wasn't in it long enough & that they used Peter Cullen & Frank Welker for the voices, other than that the whole thing is a mess.
Oh & Wheelie & Brains just pee me off even more in this than R.O.F
Attack the Block...In a word...cool
Just a pretty cool little film, didn't try too hard, was funny, a bit jumpy & just the right amount of gore to not be OTT.
Pretty fun & enjoyable little romp well worth renting if you haven't already seen it.

TiMER - ;( I don't get to shout at kryss. Okay (not overly fluffy) chick flick with a teeny tiny bit of scifi. Gaping holes in the story and it didn't go anywhere near the state religion with the sole intent on population control/selective breeding that I was thinking it would.
Forgot I watched Moneyball last week - It was nice that they kept it simple and didn't mess with the story but as a movie it was well made but a dud.
Back to 2011.
The Woman - Delicious cluster****.
The Troll Hunter - Nice film. Didn't really know what to expect but I was happy with what they made.
Win Win - Pleasant film despite the story. I wondered if the kid was the one from Elephant but he wasn't.
