I liked the cinema audio track on Planet Terror with the echo effect and audience noise(especially all the blokes in the audience screaming when the guy's balls got cut off!). I loved Death Proof but felt the grindhousey bits(like random cuts and muck-ups) annoying. Granted, that was the whole point but I'd have loved it even without that stuff.

Maybe if they revisit Grindhouse they can make it look like a dodgy pirate that's been filmed by a Handycam in the cinema, including coughing, people coming in late, people opening bags of Malteasers loudly, and for added effect they could add in an obligatory group of Asian yoofs that just won't STFU coming out the back-left speaker constantly.
That would be good, in a really obvious **** way.

Planet Terror and Death Proof, whilst maybe technically well enough made, were both badly executed IMO, esp in tone. They were all over the place. Complete waste of the talent on board. Apart from the stunt lady in Death Proof, she was clearly just hired for her 1 particular skill . . . . and it certainly wasnt acting!
You do realise that Planet Terror and Death Proof were suppose to be comedies too right?
Not that it worked for Death Proof, becuase that film was complete rubbish, but Planet Terror was funny.
Plus Starship troopers is great but it is also another intentionally bad film, most of it is pure cheese. Plus it has horrible acting, even worse than Death Proof.Last edited by rmoxon; 05-01-2012, 11:12.

A quick Google search for both movies tells me that the internetz disagrees.
Best guess for Planet Terror Genre is Action, Horror mentioned on at least 8 websites including imdb.com, wikipedia.org and filmstarts.de. Death Proof is labeled as Action Thriller by most other sites too.
So if they were meant to be comedies they pretty much failed mate. Comedies are meant to be funny, neither film is anywhere near LOL funny . . . . . IMHO of course.

Well as I said I think Death Proof failed in every way really.
However if anyone takes either film seriously then there is something wrong with them I would say.
Theyre suppose to be funny. Personally I thought Planet Terror was funny, but then I enjoy the kind of ridiculous b movies it was poking fun at.Last edited by rmoxon; 05-01-2012, 13:04.

To hopefully end this once and for all - making a trashy film is fine. However, the problem with the recent Rodriguez stuff is the incredibly poor techniques he employs. Look in wonder as he purposefully does really poor cuts to imitate **** zero budget films! Wow so ****ing clever. Look at how they take out a whole chunk to simulate a "missing reel". Then slap yourself on the back for being a self congratulatory arsehole.
I love cheesey B movie films. I love films that knowingly mock their genre IF they do it correctly. We aren't talking just trashy stories here with trashy gore effects. We're talking absolutely gob smackingly **** film technique. That's the difference. Compare to proper trashy genre films like say Braindead, made with skill.

However in the case of Planet terror and(moreso)deathproof i am for once glad i'm in the majority who approve.....and fyi i dont even bring the intended effects, cuts, damage etc into the equation when judging these films, i enjoy them because they are pure tongue in cheek fun entertainment.
Deathproof in particular is great for all manner of reasons....planet terror mainly for the gory cheese.
Overall fun though.Last edited by PaTaito; 05-01-2012, 17:38.

I also said it's not clever to make a purposefully bad film. Make a purposefully cheese filled gore filled genre flick by all means, but don't use purposefully bad Technique. The films may of worked wonderfully if done in a different way. You can keep the awful dialogue, silly plot contrivances, any of that. It can all work and make a fun film. But Crap Technique is Crap Technique.
I was really looking forward to Planet Terror. Zombie splatter from the guy who made Desperado! Should of been brilliant.
You may as well have a boom drop and hit a microphone on the actor's head. Drifting focus in shots. Actors looking into the camera. Big film scratches down the screen. Sigh.

Also none of these appalling techniques ruined any part of the movie for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
If a film sets itself out not to be taken seriously from the very start, then maybe that should extend to the "techniques" applied too....in the case of planet terror that much is a given.
I mean if the acting, dialogue, plot, direction, editing etc are all really intentionally bad....and thats all fine and dandy, then surely taking the rest of the proccess seriously would take away from the desired effect of the movie.
Its suppost to be bad, that bad you laugh at it.
As for the end result thats a matter of opinion/taste.Last edited by PaTaito; 05-01-2012, 23:17.

Just watched Submarine. It was very decent but had all wistful, guitary music running through ALL of it, which irked me somewhat. Apart from that, it verily reminded me of being an awkward teenager more than The Inbetweeners does, especially the reference to 'enjoying' industrial estates. Ayoade did good on his directorial debut.
Bit twee at points but Warp Films are a truly classy outfit, I salute them.
