Woohoo, birthday presents turned up today!!

I absolutely love all three of these films, Kes also contains Ken Loach's wonderful 1966 Cathy Come Home which I'd not seen before. It's also available via his YouTube profile if anybody wants to watch it.

I had no idea he had some films available on YouTube until just now.

            Kes is amazing.

I know release in the 18th, but anyone who has ordered Tron: Legacy Bluray from Play, it has shipped as of today apparently.

Hadn't seen Kes for years but we watched it last night and it really is something special, such a moving film but out of nowhere it throws in one of the greatest character introduction scenes when Brian Glover arrives.

I think there's real benefits to using locals instead of actors as they have that awkwardness that people in real life. The canning scene is heartbreaking and you just can't act fear, pain and confusion like that.

Just had the email from Criterion concerning their July blu-ray releases.

                Naked - Mike Leigh (12/07/11)

Beauty and the Beast - Jean Cocteau (19/07/11)

The Music Room - Satyajit Ray (19/07/11)

                L?on Morin, Priest - Jean-Pierre Melville (22/07/11)

Life During Wartime - Todd Solondz (26/07/11)

High and Low - Akira Kurosawa (26/07/11)

It's good to see yet another Mike Leigh film making an appearance as Kes and Topsy Turvey have really got me back into his work.

I've never heard of The Music Room...so I'm really tempted to give it a go.

Another Jean-Pierre Melville film can only be good news for me, I do like this one and Jean-Paul Belmondo is fantastic in the lead role.

I've just recently watched Life During Wartime on which was the first time I'd seen it and I thought it was amazing, I'll no doubt be picking this up as Lachman's incredible cinematography deserves to be experienced as honestly as possible.

Although people often praise Kurosawa's samurai films I do think that his film noir High and Low is probably one of my favourites of his films so I imagine I'll be picking this one up at some point.

My big want on BLuray, Criterion or otherwise, is In The Mood For Love, come on!!

                  Comment

Hopefully it won't be too far away as it was set to be released on blu-ray at the end of last year in France but for some reason it didn't happen. Many French only titles avoid English subtitles which may or may not be an issue for you.

As far as I'm aware Criterion still have the rights in the US as they're still selling it on DVD.

It's worth keeping an eye on Australia releases also as Dendy are starting to release quite a few international films and they still hold the rights there. I've picked up their Am?lie and The Diving Bell and The Butterfly blu-rays and both were fantastic releases.

I've found EzyDVD and the eBay user DVD Orchard to be the best places to watch for Australian releases but of course, there are others out there.

There's a few decent titles on the way shortly.

Arrow Films are releasing both The Bicycle Thieves and Les Diaboliques on Monday. I've no idea about The Bicycle Thieves but their version of Les Diaboliques is pretty poor, Criterion are also releasing Les Diaboliques in May so it may be worth waiting to see what they do with it.

The BBC's amazing Civilisation is being released as a four blu-ray box set on the 9th May, it's selling for around ?17 online. This really needs to be seen by people it's surely one of the best series produced by the BBC.

It's also a good day for fans of animation with Laputa: Castle In The Sky, My Neighbours The Yamadas and Chico And Rita being released in the UK. Rififi is released the same day but it's another from Arrow films so it could end up being another that they manhandle.

The 16th of May is the day for war films as Platoon, The Thin Red Line and Tigerland are all getting blu-ray releases.

Have just been investigating Arrow Films release of The Bicycle Thieves and they seem to have done exactly what I was worried about.

This release appears to have been produced from the recent Fox restoration just like the Italian blu-ray was but for some reason Arrow Films have yet again decided to ruin their version with a layer of clumsily applied DNR.

There's a couple of comparison shot's here to show what they've done to the film:
                                1. Italian Fox blu-ray v UK Arrow blu-ray
                                2. Italian Fox blu-ray v UK Arrow blu-ray

The good news for people who do want the film over here is that both carry the same English subtitles but the Fox Italy release tends to be a little more expensive.

If you are looking for the Italian version it carries the Italian name of Ladri di Biciclette.

I really can't recommend this film enough, it's so rare to see a film get so many things so right all at the same time. Very occasionally a film like this comes along and changes everything about the films that follow it.
