Didn't realise Nick Clegg was in it! ... I was pleased with PEGG's performance, he actually got to act for once which he rarely does in movies for the most part. Not that he can't act, just that you expect him to say funny stuff all the time, and there was certainly some meat and bones around the 'she canny take anymore' lines.

I didn't actually notice the lens flare in this, so either I am used to it, or it was toned down considerably.

I think the lens flares were about on the same level - I had rewatched the previous one before seeing this new one. They're all over it but I guess they have become part of the look now so perhaps we just notice them less. Personally, I don't mind them. A few times they get distracting (mostly when pasted over a shot with no noticeable light source) and I certainly don't think they're needed but not a big deal for me. If other directors take over, I do hope they get phased out at some point.

As for Pegg's Scotty, I think he's great. Just very entertaining and they gave him more to do in this one and I felt he did it all very well. Nick Clegg's performance on the other hand...

Pegg also had one of the best lines in the film , which was used to make fun of the iconic door opening sound. That bit did make me chuckle.

            For me

Khan's casting is inconsistent but I don't mind as Cumberbatch was so good and appropriate casting would have made a fairly obvious twist even morr so. The death of Kirk scene was always going to lack impact due to him being brought back but it was handled well and mirroring the WoK events was a nice play that respected the origins of the storyline and also brought Kirk and Spock close together in a way that the original timeline took a lot longer to do which is necessary due to there being no series events to flesh things out this time. The Klingon War would be good but I hope they hold off for now and let them do some exploring as the ending suggests first. My biggest hope for Trek 13 is a central role for Bones as he needs pulling more j to that central friendship and Urban is under utilised so far. Even less Uhura too, dull performance twice now and I feel the Spock romance is only because she's one of tje only women around.

I completely agree with your last comment and yet I also found myself struck by the sexist streak in the movie. As a result, in spite of the underwear scene,

I was very glad they seemed to add Carol Marcus to the team at the end of the movie. So few women though even in the background characters. The council of top officers seemed to be mostly male, all the security staff is male. Oh but we can have some female nurses. Seemed a little archaic to me but that's something I have become more and more sensitive to.

But I agree with you that Uhura often seemed sandwiched in there to provide at least some gender balance but that was at the expense of Urban's awesome McCoy. I too would love Bones to get much more to do in the next one.

With so many characters its always going to be difficult to get them all equal screen time. Star trek has always been about Kirk, Spock & McCoy, they were always the lead characters in the end. The first film was no different in that regard.

Cho & Yelchin get barely any screen time, they are probably in it for 5 minutes between the pair of them.

I thought Alice Eve worked well (gratuitous underwear shot aside), but the character could have been fleshed out a lot more. The issue with these films and I guess then reason why they went down the route the did for the first two films was that you are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't.

Make the films too much for the fans and you alienate the casuals , make the films too much for the casuals and you will piss off the long term fans. In that regard I think the balance of both the films has been pretty much spot on, even if Into Darkness does lean slightly more on the fan side. Its a difficult balancing act which personally I think they have got spot on for the most part.

Whoever takes over the 'chair' (in this case directors), for the third film will have a difficult task, I can't see many directors wanting to take on it. Kosinski has the visual style to be able to do it, but still lacks character development.

I can't of anyone else at the moment who could possibly take over, possibly Mendes (no experience in Scifi though), maybe Branagh simply because of Thor ... Who knows at this point, it might be the last time we see it on screen with these actors.

If Kosinski was paired with a really good writer, he could be an awesome choice.

Agreed on that ... He certainly has the talent to do it, he just needs to be paired with the right people.

I guess that will depend on why you thought the first one was cobblers. The second one is much the same just ramped up to the nth degree.

Saw this tonight, ramped the scale and the action right up compared to the first. Thought Benedict made a great villian, liked the characterisation and tone of his portrayal.

If future Star Trek films can achieve this level of excitement I'll be happy. Just trim the running time down about 15 minutes and that will be fine JJ...

So what was up with the

redesign of the Klingons, was that a reference to the genetic bomb the augments let off in enterprise, or just Abrams new take on them?

I like movies to be movies and videogames to be videogames ; this new one looks even more like a videogame than the last one.

                                Pretty similar name to this
